Just when everybody thought Xavi Hernandez was going to return to Barcelona, the former midfielder declined the club's offer, stating he’s ready to do business once the season is over.
That’s a setback for Barca, who looked ready to reunite with Xavi.
However, they are set to part ways with Ernesto Valverde and have reportedly set their sights in a different candidate to take over at the Camp Nou. According to radio station RAC1, Mauricio Pochettino is now the frontrunner to get the job.
After Xavi rejected their offer, the Blaugrana’s board started to look for alternatives and they have found a very good one. Pochettino had a stellar spell in charge of Tottenham before being let go in November.
He won’t be a stranger in Barcelona, as he already managed there before, only not for the Blaugrana.
The Argentinian boss spent three years in the dugout at Espanyol, having played 275 games for the club across two spells.
It remains to be seen what Poch is going to do, though, as he’s stated before he wouldn’t manage two clubs: Barcelona and Arsenal given his ties with Espanyol and Tottenham. Still, this is football and we’ve seen promises being broken in the past.
Barcelona would get a great coach with Poch, who has a bright future ahead of him and looks ready to take on a bigger challenge, something that the La Liga champions can provide.
