Now that his UEFA Champions League dreams are over, it looks like Ajax's Matthijs de Ligt will have enough time to figure out what does he want to do with his future, amid a lot of interest from some of the best teams in the old continent.
After already turning down Manchester United on quite an embarrassing fashion, it looked like De Ligt's decision was narrowing down towards Bayern Munchen, Manchester City, Juventus, Real Madrid, or Barcelona. However, The Independent claim the Dutch wonderkid could be leaning towards a move to Camp Nou in the summer.
The Catalans are quite confident on their chances of signing de Ligt two months from now, as per the report, with Josep Maria Bartomeu quite fond of his talents and eager to make a run at him as soon as possible.
Barcelona would have to pay as much as £60 million in order to lure him away from his homeland, a sum that's looking cheaper by the day as the center-back continues to thrive in both sides of the pitch as a huge difference maker.
The 19-year-old scored again during his side's heart-breaking loss against Tottenham Hotspur in the UEFA Champions League semi-finals, and while Ajax failed to reach the tournament's ultimate stage, his defensive contributions were remarkable, to say the least.
Despite his tender age, de Ligt is already the team's captain and a grown leader on and off the pitch, and he'll be thrilled to join his teammate and french Frenkie de Jong at Camp Nou as well. Also, it would further boost his chances of becoming a major factor for his national team.
Nonetheless, he'll have plenty of competition at Barcelona, with Clement Lenglet and Gerard Pique as Ernesto Valverde's go-to-guys in the center of the defense, at least for the time being.
