Bartomeu Says Barcelona Need To Prepare For The Post-Messi Era

Ever since making his professional debut for FC Barcelona, Lionel Messi changed not only club history, but the history of this beautiful sport itself.

Still, all good things must come to an end, even Messi's sensational career, and Josep Bartomeu, Barcelona's president, is well aware of that.

Having that in mind, the team's president says the club is trying to prepare for life without Messi, and that's why Barcelona's trying to gather as much young and promising players as they can for the future, as they did with Frenkie de Jong's signing.

Messi has constantly stated that he's determined to end his career as a Blaugrana amid a lot of speculation pointing towards an eventual departure from Camp Nou.

Also, Bartomeu is well aware of the fact that he's still got a lot left in the tank, but that hasn't stopped him from making moves to secure the team's ability to contend in the future the same way they've done throughout the Messi era.

"I know one day Lionel will say he's retiring, even though that's still a while away yet. We have to prepare the club for the future, so we are bringing great young players to the team because we need to continue this era of success. That's our responsibility. My mandate will be finished in two seasons. So I need to leave the club in a great position and tell the new president 'that's our legacy'", Bartomeu told BBC Radio.

Messi is still just 31 years old, but he's already broken all kinds of records for the Catalans. He's the team's all-time leading scorer with 616 goals, and there's no way in hell he's retiring before hitting the 700 goal milestone, at least.

We all know he's bound to say goodbye one day. Hopefully, that day is years away from now.
