Great news for Barcelona, as Lionel Messi is optimistic he can return to action this week when his team faces Internazionale for the second leg of the Champions League. He picked up a thigh injury last Tuesday against Villarreal, who made the Argentinian star to miss last weekend's win over Getafe.
He was expected to miss more time, but according to SPORT, sources close to Barca's medical team has revealed the Argentine's thigh injury has evolved well, much better than they initially expected. To make things better, Lio could be part of the squad that will face Inter this Wednesday, either from the beginning or coming off the bench.
Nevertheless, the same sources have also told SPORT that Barcelona won’t take any risks with Messi's fitness. Lio missed the first four games of the season with a calf injury picked up in the preseason. He returned as a substitute against Borussia Dortmund and also came on against Granada, a game Barcelona lost 2-0.
This season hasn’t started the best way for him, as the first time he got to start a match, against Villarreal, he went down again with a thigh injury. Fortunately, he seems to be recovering better than expected and has shown his willingness to join his teammates against the Serie A team this Wednesday.
So far he has played 120 minutes and hasn't even appeared in 20 percent of Barça's games this season. Ansu Fati and Ousmane Dembele are also currently fighting small injuries. Last weekend against Getafe, Ernesto Valverde's front three was Antoine Griezmann, Luis Suarez and Carles Perez.
Things aren’t going the best way for Barcelona right now, but they could see Messi making his return this week, so there is a light at the end of the tunnel for the Blaugrana.
