Luis Figo has spoken out about the urban myth that he and former teammate Pep Guardiola were more than friends when they both were part of Barcelona. They were good friends during their time playing together at the Camp Nou but while they were close, Figo made it clear that it wasn’t more than that.
“Guardiola was a great friend," Figo told ICON, as per AS.
"He helped me a lot. He was my roommate, but there was nothing. I like women."
This is a sensitive topic, as we’re still yet to see a current, star footballer come out as gay, with all the difficulties they could face.
"Football is very cruel," Figo added when asked why no La Liga players have come out as gay.
"You play every Sunday and you'd be criticised for that and not your performance. It will be for protection [that nobody has come out], not because of shame."
The Portuguese legend is married to Helen Svedin and have three daughters together.
Figo had a terrific career, playing with the best clubs in the world, including Real Madrid and the aforementioned Barcelona. The 2000 Ballon d’Or has finally spoken on this matter, denying everything that’s been said.
