A lot has been said about Pep Guardiola and his future with Manchester City, with the Spaniard boss linked with an exit from the Etihad Stadium in recent days. Even though he played down rumors claiming he would leave the Citizens at the end of this season, not everything is done and said on this matter.
Pep made it clear that he will run down his contract but left the door open for a potential exit. This has sparked the rumors that he could leave Manchester when his deal is over, and one of his players could follow him.
According to The Sun, Raheem Sterling is reluctant to sign a new deal with City until Guardiola commits his long-term future to the current Premier League champions.
Sterling wants to know if Pep is staying beyond the 18 months left on his deal, before committing his own future to City. If the Spanish tactician decides to leave the Etihad and go take charge of a different side, the England international could follow him.
They two have formed a deep bond that dates from 2016, where Pep helped the winger recover his confidence.
As soon as Guardiola was confirmed as Manuel Pellegrini’s replacement, one of his first calls was to the struggling attacker to promise him that if he stuck with him, according to sources close to the player, he would not only make him a world star but he would end up as City’s highest-paid player.
So far things have gone well for the 24-year-old, who has taken his game to the next level under Guardiola. In the Catalan’s first season he managed just ten goals but bagged 23 in the 2017-18 campaign, 25 last season and 14 so far in this one.
Following his impressive performances, clubs like Barcelona, Real Madrid, and Paris Saint-Germain would happily pay at least £200 million for him. City have to remain on alert with Sterling, who said over the summer he wants to go overseas at some point in his career.
