Ajax sporting director Marc Overmars has revealed a curious anecdote of how he had to intervene when things got a little heated between Real Madrid’s president Florentino Perez and Ajax General director Edwin Van der Sar.
Overmars, Van der Sar explained how the celebrations got a little out of hand and Florentino wasn't amused by it. Ex-goalkeeper Van der Sar recalled how he found it almost impossible to control himself, via Marca:
"I was cheering the team on but I had to contain myself for the first three goals because I was sat right next to Real Madrid's president. But when we made it 1-4..."
"I nudged Marc (Overmars) or squeezed his knee after the fourth went in we jumped up and gave each other a high five. What would they be thinking? Maybe it was a bit disrespectful..."
Overmars then smiled at Van der Sar, adding:
"I don't think Edwin's telling the full story. Real Madrid's president hit him. Later we had to calm things down a bit..."
Ajax pulled off a great feat that day, defeating the current champions of the competition, at home, and trashing them in the process, showing a great level. They were the underdogs in that game and series, but Hakim Ziyech, David Neres, Dusan Tadic and company knew how to shock everybody and eliminated the 13-time Champions League winners.
Normally, when you witness such a great game by your team, you react the way Van der Sar and Overmars did, but sometimes not everybody is ready to see that kind of celebration, especially at their home ground.
