Newcastle United’s winger Matt Ritchie has been known for kicking the corner flag whenever his team scores a goal. This has been a common practice for him, but the latest edition of his antics took a different level.
Isaac Hayden scored a late header, after Ritchie's poor corner, to secure a much needed and shocking three points for the Magpies against fourth-place Chelsea.
The problem started when Ritchie celebrated by running to the corner to join the goalscorer and kicked the corner flag. That’s normal, of course, but the flag went into the jubilant crowd and hit one fan right in the crotch.
Ritchie was sidelined due to an injury, but now he’s back and in great form, kicking corner flags to the most unexpected places. His reputation for doing this is such that the Athletic ran an article on the former Bournemouth winger titled 'Corner flags beware: Radgie Ritchie - 'the angry wee bastard' - is back' earlier in the week.
This was indeed a victory to celebrate, as everything looked against Newcastle. Frank Lampard's side had 70% of possession and 19 shots, although only four were on target.
Steve Bruce and his pupils did a terrific job defending their net, and Hayden’s score completed the job. The three points took Newcastle up to 12th and seven points clear of the relegation zone.
