The rivalry between Manchester City and Liverpool has reached a different level in recent times, as the two Premier League giants are the best teams in England.

Last season they competed until the last matchday of the season to define who was going to win the Premier League trophy, with the Citizens edging the Reds out for only one point.

The bad blood between these two clubs is very obvious, but that could have taken another dimension if City landed one former Liverpool player this summer.

It’s well known that Philippe Coutinho is anything but loved by Liverpool fans after his turbulent exit from the club and his subsequent arrival in Barcelona.

Coutinho couldn’t live up to the expectations in the Camp Nou, which made Barcelona look for a new team for the Brazilian star. Luckily, they found Bayern Munich, who landed the Magician on loan with an option to buy for £110 million next summer.

Now, according to talkSPORT, before the Bavarians struck a deal for the 27-year-old, Manchester City was a big favorite to land Coutinho. As per Marca, the Sky Blues were given the chance to land Coutinho by Barcelona, but Pep Guardiola rejected the move as he wasn’t interested in taking him to the Etihad.

That would have been a problem for Pep, who counts with plenty of good options to pick in that department. Having players like Kevin De Bruyne, Leroy Sane, Raheem Sterling and more, it doesn’t look like Pep and his team needed to add Coutinho.

While City are happy with their incredibly talented squad, Coutinho is now focused on his new challenge with Bayern Munich.

If he went to the Etihad, imagine how mad Liverpool fans would have gone. Joining their biggest rival in the Premier right now would have been a blow for them.
