The last couple of days have been a complete rollercoaster for Quique Setien. He was walking around by the cows in his town on Monday and today he is managing the one and only Lionel Messi, a player he’s revealed is in love with.

It all started when Setien met the Argentinian striker for the first time a few years back when invited to training by Pep Guardiola. And he felt the need to tell Messi to be around for a long, long time.

"One day, invited by Guardiola, I had the opportunity to watch Messi train from the side of the pitch," Setien told El Pais, as per Marca.

"I went up to him and I asked him to keep playing until I was 60 years old, at least until I die."

Their relationship continued growing over the years. Messi would then catch up with Setien after a game against Las Palmas back in 2016. At the time, the pair had a long chat after the game was finished. Now, Setien will have the privilege to manage one of the best players in the history of the game, and he can’t be more excited about it.

"I have seen some great players doing wonderful things, but being so decisive for so long over 12 or 14 years as a professional, I think no player, maybe only Pele in his time, has shown that level," Setien is quoted as saying as per Metro.

"'He shows it in every game. I don't know how many hat-tricks he's had. It's a luxury to be in the same era as him, seeing him every Sunday for 12 or 14 years. He is very good."

If he has that good relationship with Barcelona’s biggest star, then Setien will have an easier job at the Camp Nou. Barcelona need to improve their level after several setbacks over the last two and a half seasons led to Ernesto Valverde’s sacking.
