Atletico Madrid remain confident in their pursuit of James Rodriguez following the closure of the Premier League summer transfer window. Rodriguez was considered by Real Madrid as a makeweight for a potential deal involving Paul Pogba, but now the English window has closed and a move to Madrid is extremely unlikely for the French midfielder.
Diego Simeone’s side has had a very entertaining offseason, landing big players and becoming a real threat to both Barcelona and Real Madrid ahead of the next campaign, but they don’t rule out a move for the Colombian playmaker, who is seen as the last piece Atletico need to be a candidate for the La Liga title.
Italian side Napoli had shown their interest in Rodriguez, but Florentino Perez's demands of €50 million made the Serie A team lost their enthusiasm about a move for the player. With both Napoli and Manchester United out of the picture, things look great for Los Rojiblancos, who, according to Marca, are confident they can get a deal done for James.
Nevertheless, Atletico face a big obstacle to signing Rodriguez, Real’s unwillingness to help their rivals strengthen their ranks, especially after the 7-3 preseason defeat in New Jersey. But, as we get closer to the end of the window, Los Blancos could be forced to part ways with James and sell him to their neighbors if no other club comes up with the money.
If they decide not to sell the Colombian, they would be losing a few million that can help them in a potential deal for Neymar.
