Transfer News: Manchester City Miss Out On Joao Felix As The Portuguese Star Gets Closer To La Liga

After recent reports indicated that Manchester City was set to take the lead on the race to sign Portuguese wonderkid Joao Felix, now the striker looks closer to a move to Spain instead of England. Felix has been tracked by some of the biggest clubs across Europe this offseason, but his next destination may not be biggest one of all.

In-demand Benfica player can be on his way to Atletico Madrid and his signing can be confirmed in the coming hours, with the club's promise of a starring role playing a huge part in the youngster's decision.

Manchester City alongside Manchester United and even Juventus were following Felix after a marvelous season with Benfica, in which he scored 20 goals. The Citizens were eager to land the 19-year-old; in recent days they looked like the frontrunners to get Felix’s signature and now Atletico have the chance to steal one of the most interesting youngsters in European football.

According to Marca, the Spaniards have locked Felix up after promising him that he will become the focal player of the team and from now on the squad will be built around him.

The Sky Blues, on the other hand, were ready to offer him a contract worth €30 million per year to get him to join the Premier League. In addition, the club reportedly agreed to loan Felix back to Benfica for a season, something that Benfica were wishing in order to maintain the player at least one more season with them.

Yet, money doesn’t seem to be a huge concern for Felix, with Record identifying he’d prefer to go a team where he actually can showcase his talents, exactly what Atletico are offering right now. Joao held talks with Diego Simeone and the board, confirming that this move is the best for him, with negotiations on a deal getting close to being finalized.

The Portuguese international is eager to prove himself against the elite and the La Liga is the best option for him at this moment, seeing that he won’t count with opportunities in Manchester. This is going to be a win-win move if pulled off; facing the departure of Antoine Griezmann, Atletico are eager to find a new star to lead the team to play for meaningful things once again.
