Manchester United were unable to strike a deal for the new Borussia Dortmund striker Erling Haaland due to high demands from the player’s representatives. Now that’s part of the past and the Red Devils have reportedly identified five new targets.

As noted by BBC Sport, the 19-year-old joined the Bundesliga giants from RB Salzburg for just €20m after a hugely impressive start to this season. Both Manchester and Juventus were understood to be the frontrunners for that signing and now they have to turn their attention to different assets.

Now, according to the Daily Mail, United could have up to five alternative targets in mind for January, and while they aren’t all the same type of player as Haaland, all these players could all add a new dynamic and fresh threat in the attack for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Moussa Dembele, Odsonne Edouard, Saul Niguez, Christian Eriksen and James Maddison are all specifically named as touted targets for United. It remains to be seen if they actually launch an offer for any player on that list and more importantly if they are successful bids.

It’s hard to see any of these players leaving their current sides in the middle of the season given their importance. Perhaps Eriksen leaving Tottenham doesn’t sound as crazy, as his contract is running down and the Spurs would prefer to sell him at a cut-price than losing him for nothing.

Perhaps the best decision for Solskjaer and company is to wait until the end of the season and not feel forced into buying just because they missed out on Haaland.

They have gotten better in their form in recent games and are once again in contention for a top-four finish in the Premier League. That said, perhaps they will feel confident that they have enough until the summer.
