Mauro Icardi is set to leave Internazionale after having a couple of overwhelming seasons with the Nerazzurri. He lost the captaincy last season when Luciano Spaletti was the club’s boss and now he lost his No. 9 shirt at the expense of newcomer Romelu Lukaku.
Icardi was considered a big figure in Inter during his first years with them, but his relationship with the club’s hierarchy and the fans has been decreasing at the point that nobody wants him in Milan right now. Since he joined Inter in 2013, he scored 124 goals in 219 appearances, becoming one of the deadliest strikers in Europe.
After all the problems he had with the club last season, and his wife and agent making things worse for him, Mauro is set to depart and his next destination may well be in Italy. Inter’s archrivals, Juventus are thought to be his preferred destination this summer, but there are other squads ready to lure the Argentinian striker if the Bianconeri don’t make a move for him.
According to Calciomercato (via Corriere della Sera), Icardi is willing to continue to prioritize a move to the Allianz Stadium until Sunday, but in the case that a deal can’t be done before that, he will also consider options from Roma and Napoli.
This is a complex situation for the Serie A champions, who need to sell players to raise funds and make room for the potential arrival of Icardi. Juve’s boss Maurizio Sarri recently stated that six players need to leave the club, but so far nobody has left the Italian side. Counting with the likes of Mario Mandzukic, Paulo Dybala and Gonzalo Higuain to help Cristiano Ronaldo in the attack, is unclear how they would land Icardi and not mess things up.
Still, if they don’t move fast, there is a good chance they will see Icardi joining a different team with both Roma and Napoli seemingly looking to boost their offense, too.
