This past summer was a tumultuous one for Neymar Jr., who was linked with a move to Real Madrid, Barcelona, and even Juventus, but he ultimately stayed put in Paris Saint-Germain, where he’s showing good things this season.
However, before that, Neymar was heavily linked with a return to Barcelona, and everything pointed out that he was going to join the Blaugrana before everything fell apart. Now, we get to know he held secret talks with more than one club, as he studied all his options this past offseason.
A report from Marca now reveals the state of mind of the Brazilian during those trying months. This report notes that between 1 August and 20 August, Neymar and his representatives held several talks with high-profile players at Real Madrid in an attempt to get a deal done with Los Blancos.
Among these players, captain Sergio Ramos was included, who praised the player's abilities, alongside compatriots Casemiro and Marcelo, who were reportedly eager to give Neymar a warm welcome, with Ballon d'Or winner Luka Modric also involved.
The main message was Ney’s desire to join Real Madrid and get some credibility among his potential new teammates. As for Madrid, they’re understood to have made a big effort to strike a deal for the Brazilian winger, while studying who they could sell to afford this move. Marca state that all this happened with total 'knowledge' of PSG's sporting director Leonardo.
Florentino Perez is said to be hesitant on the move given how high it would have cost but made it clear he doesn't rule out a future approach for Ney. Moreover, with James Rodriguez and Gareth Bale staying at Madrid, they couldn’t get any money to try to fund a move for the 27-year-old.
We’ll see how this goes next summer if Madrid want to go for him once again, more so after learning Neymar is hesitating about a return to Barcelona.
