Raheem Sterling is getting a lot of criticism for his behavior at some point in the derby of Manchester on Saturday. He’s gotten into some troubles in the past, but this time things go beyond that, as he’s seen on camera doing nothing to help one of his colleagues.
When Manchester United midfielder Fred was being racially abused by Manchester City fans, Sterling didn’t do anything to stop supporters from pelting various objects at the Brazilian player. In fact, he stood by and left it to other players to help out Fred.
A lot of fans haven’t taken this the best way and are tearing Sterling, especially on Twitter. Riyad Mahrez and David Silva stepped in to comfort Fred and asked the fans to stop it.
The English international has been vocal in the past about kicking this kind of thing out of the game, so it’s a shock to see that when he had a big chance to make a difference, he decided to do nothing.
It’s easy to take this out of context, but if you’re a player advocating to erase racism from football, you have to practice what you preach, which he doesn’t appear to do here.
