Barcelona are one of the biggest clubs in the world, drawing the attention that only a few can attract, so there is no surprise they stir the pot every time the Blaugrana appear in any kind of rumor.
They had big expectations for this season, but so far things haven’t gone as they expected, which is why the club has started to look for solutions. Ernesto Valverde isn’t doing a terrible job, but nobody can say Barcelona are showing a great level. It looks like every week the Spanish boss gets closer to end his time with the club, as there are already candidates to replace him at Camp Nou.
One of those is Marcelo Gallardo, one of the best managers in South American football over the last couple of years, taking Argentinian giants River Plate to win several trophies both in Argentina and overseas.
According to AS, Barcelona had contacted with the River Plate manager to take over from Valverde. Even though Sport claimed this report was false, some people close to the club actually sees a potential arrival of Gallardo with good eyes. Club legend Xavi Hernandez recently gave an interview to Spanish radio, in which he had nothing but good words towards the Argentinian boss.
When asked about Gallardo, Xavi said (via Mundoalbiceleste):
“I liked him when he played, he was a player with a lot of talent, he surely had to think because physically, he wasn’t strong. I think he’s an intelligent person, that thinks and wants to play the football which we like in Barcelona. He appears to be a person with a big personality and he is destined to succeed.”
Then, he added that Gallardo might end up coaching Barca, as other Argentinian managers did in the past.
“You never know, there have been a few Argentine coaches. The last one was ‘Tata’ Martino, also there was Menotti for several years, you never know the future. The Argentine player and the Argentine coach does not have to be envious of anyone, they always work well, be it the coaches of players.”
Gallardo has been great with River, and some people are starting to put him in a different team in the near future. Even though plenty of fans believe he’ll take the reins of the Argentina national team, maybe his future is in Barcelona, with Lionel Messi and company.
