Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham now wants to talk about “love,” “respect,” and “peace” amid the fallout over her stance on transgender athletes.
Over the last two weeks, Cunningham has made news for reasons other than her on-court performance. Her stance on protecting women’s sports for biological women sparked heated debates. She thrust herself into the transgender athlete debate by saying biological men shouldn’t participate in women’s or girls’ sports. Ever since, she has been a political hot topic nearly every day.
Cunningham now wants to move on from the debate that started after her remarks caused discord within the WNBA and even led to a ban on a team owner who objected to pro-Cunningham protests at courtside. The eight-year WNBA veteran appeared on USA Network on August 5, 2026, to discuss the most recent developments in the WNBA’s transgender player debate.
Not withdrawing from her stance, Cunningham said, “I have a clear and strong perspective on this. With that being said, I know that people are not always going to align and agree. I totally understand that. But I think the most important thing is having that respect, having that love, and pursuing peace in these conversations, in these debates, because I think that is healthy.”
Cunningham has emerged as the spokesperson for the transgender athlete debate to the point that WNBA players and coaches are being questioned on national television programs about their views on the sensitive issue. During a postgame news conference, her Fever teammate Caitlin Clark faced criticism from certain national talking heads for failing to take a firm stand on the social and political issue.
“Now, with that being said, I just hate how the W, the basketball of it all, is just getting overshadowed,” Cunningham said.
“I think you are seeing teams playing at the highest level they’ve ever played at. You see great basketball, the most elite-level basketball this league has ever seen. And it just makes me sad that all this kind of drama and things that truly don’t matter – the basketball is getting overshadowed.”
Cunningham did make an effort to redirect attention to basketball in her statements on USA Network. However, her critics won’t let go of the fact that this whole ruckus started with her ESPN interview and her later doubling down.

Her comments have crossed the WNBA arena. The issue has become a hot topic of discussion among celebrities, politicians, other athletes, and even social media personalities, with no one ready to let go of the conversation that easily.
Bringing basketball back into focus, Cunningham is averaging 9.3 points, 2.3 rebounds, and 1.4 assists in 29 games this season. The Fever are now 19-11 and in the thick of the playoff race. Cunningham hopes to play a significant role in the rotation as Indiana aims to win a title in the playoffs, which are just a month away.
The whole team seems to want to move on from this scandal. In fact, Clark and other team members stated unequivocally that they just want to focus on basketball in the future. With Clark and Kelsey Mitchell leading the team, the 2012 WNBA Champions have a good chance of winning another championship this year. But for that, the team and its members have to refocus on hooping and avoid getting embroiled in political debates.
Cunningham wants the attention to go back to the real basketball being played on the court. But it is too much to expect everyone to forget something that has been making headlines for weeks. Fever fans are now praying this won’t distract the team from its 2026 title chase.
