As the numbers continue to rise, the short-term future of sports around the world continue to be in jeopardy.
The NBA, NHL, and NFL have all announced some degree of cancelation or postponement to their activities. The 2020 Olympic Games are following-suit.
International Olympic Committee member Dick Pound confirmed to USA Today on Monday that the 2020 Tokyo Olympics are, indeed, going to be postponed (at the very least).
“On the basis of the information the IOC has, postponement has been decided,” Pound said in a phone interview. “The parameters going forward have not been determined, but the Games are not going to start on July 24, that much I know.”
“It will come in stages,” said Pound, 78, the longest-serving IOC member. “We will postpone this and begin to deal with all the ramifications of moving this, which are immense.”
Obviously, the risk of infection would drastically increase in an event like the 2020 Olympics. With so many people confined in a closed space, it would essentially be a hot-bed for the virus.
As for how long they will have to push it back, nobody quite knows at this time. If COVID-19 continues to linger in the weeks and months to come, the Olympics might not happen at all this year.
Either way, it’s a truly dark age fo the sports world right now. As we all continue to wait this thing out, anxiety and uncertainty continue to increase.
