It’s not a secret that Bill Simmons is a diehard Boston Celtics fan. He’s never hidden it or shied away from it, and he’s become infamous online for the countless failed hot takes he’s fired not only about the Celtics but also about their rivals.
That’s why he’s never been much of a fan-favorite among the Lakers’ community. Then again, more than being mad at him, Lakers fans often make fun of him for all the countless, uncalled shots he’s constantly firing at LeBron James and them.
And now that the Lakers are en route to tying the Boston Celtics with 17 NBA Championships, Simmons had no choice but to say that they’re about to win their 12th title, as they shouldn’t count those 5 from their days at Minnesota.
“The Lakers have 12 titles. OKC has 0,” Simmons said on his podcast before claiming that Anthony Davis could ‘pull a Kawhi Leonard’ and leave the Lakers this summer.
Simmons has constantly used this argument about the Lakers’ Championships from their days in Minneapolis, using the Oklahoma City Thunder as a comparison. However, the Thunder chose not to honor the Sonics’ title and are a somewhat new franchise, while the Lakers only relocated.
If anything, fans often question the legitimacy of the Celtics’ 11 rings during the Bill Russell era due to how non-competitive the league was. They’re still as valid as those won by George Mikan and John Kundla.
It’s clear that Bill just can’t stand the fact that the Lakers are going to become arguably the greatest franchise of all time, while Boston hasn’t been to the Finals in a decade and have won just one title over the past 34 years.
Even so, the Lakers still have to beat the Miami Heat one more time before tying Boston and we’ve already seen two teams blow 3-1 leads in the bubble, so perhaps we shouldn’t get ahead of ourselves.
