Jalen Green, one of the most promising young stars in the NBA, has secured a groundbreaking three-year, $106 million rookie contract extension with the Houston Rockets. The deal, reported by Shams Charania of ESPN, which includes a player option in the third year, sets a unique precedent in the league, as Green becomes the first player to negotiate a 2-plus-1 rookie extension on a nine-figure contract.

This structure allows Green the flexibility to potentially increase his earnings while staying with the Rockets, solidifying his role as a cornerstone of the team’s future.

Jalen Green, 22, has been a focal point of the Houston Rockets‘ rebuild since being drafted second overall in 2021. His explosive scoring ability and sky-high potential made him a prime candidate for an extension, and Houston recognized his value by offering a deal that keeps him in town for at least the next few seasons. With the player option, Green can opt-out after the 2026-27 season and potentially secure an even larger contract depending on his performance and market value.

Interestingly, there were reports suggesting that the Rockets were not initially willing to offer Green a maximum contract extension, sparking speculation that he could eventually seek a better deal. Instead, Green and the Rockets have found a middle ground with this shorter-term deal, allowing him to secure financial stability now while keeping the door open for a potentially larger max contract in the near future. This strategic move ensures Green can maximize his earnings down the line if he continues to develop as expected.

In his third NBA season, Green averaged 19.6 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 3.5 assists per game, showcasing his scoring prowess and ability to fill up the stat sheet. His natural scoring ability has made him a critical piece of Houston’s young core, alongside talented players like Alperen Sengun, Jabari Smith Jr., and others.

Green’s contract is not only significant for its value but also for its flexibility. The player option in the third year allows him to re-evaluate his situation in Houston and potentially test the market for a max-level deal after the 2026-27 season. If he continues his upward trajectory and reaches his full potential, Green could position himself for a maximum contract worth over $240 million, well beyond the current $225 million rookie scale maximum.

For the Rockets, securing Green with this extension demonstrates their commitment to building a team around their young stars. Since the departure of James Harden in 2021, the franchise has been in rebuilding mode, and Green has been a key figure in that process. By locking in Green for the next few years, Houston ensures stability as they continue to develop their talented roster and aim for long-term success in the Western Conference.

Despite the positive outlook surrounding Green’s future, there were some questions earlier in the year about his role in Houston. Trade rumors swirled, with reports suggesting that Green could potentially be made available in the right deal. However, the Rockets’ decision to extend Green shows their confidence in his development and leadership on the court. They see him as a crucial part of their present and future, and this contract reflects their belief in his ability to elevate the franchise.

In addition to Green’s deal, the Rockets are also working on negotiations with center Alperen Sengün, another rising star on the team. With both Green and Sengün playing pivotal roles, Houston’s future looks bright as they aim to return to contention in the coming years.

As Green enters the 2024-25 season, he will have the opportunity to further prove his worth and live up to the expectations set by this historic contract. With the confidence of the organization behind him and the flexibility to control his future, Green is poised to continue his ascent as one of the NBA’s brightest young stars.
