Trey Murphy III has now made nearly $10 million in salaries during his time in the NBA but there was obviously a time when he wasn’t all that rich. On the Check Ball show, Murphy was asked if he did any job as he worked his way up to the NBA and he revealed he worked at Chick-fil-A as a teenager but quit rather quickly.
“The one job I had was Chick-fil-A,” Murphy said. “I worked at Chick-fil-A for about a month. What it was that I was like I have to quit, I was giving a lady a drink one time and she crushed the drink in my hand and spilled it on her shoe and then said, ‘You crushed my drink.’
“And me at the time, being 16, a little dumb… I was like (angry) and then my manager came and saved the day because I almost yelled at the lady for the Chick-fil-A incident,” Murphy continued. “But I had to contain myself and I was like you know what, I’m putting in my 2-week notice right now.”

I would have been pretty upset too, if someone had blamed me after they messed up. It’s something that’s becoming more and more commonplace nowadays, unfortunately. The manager at least saved the day for Murphy, as he would have been in a bit of trouble had he yelled at the lady. I am guessing he realized with that incident, though, that there would be more many like these coming up, so quitting was the right thing to do.
Fortunately for Murphy, he’ll never have to work at Chick-fil-A or any other fast food joint for the rest of his life, thanks to the millions he’s making in the NBA. The 24-year-old has played three years in the league so far and I think it’s safe to say he’s going to be playing many more.
Murphy was selected with the 17th pick of the 2021 NBA Draft by the Memphis Grizzlies, with his rights being traded to the New Orleans Pelicans. He didn’t play much for the Pelicans as a rookie but is now very much a key piece for them.
In the 2023-24 season, Murphy averaged 14.8 points, 4.9 rebounds, 2.2 assists, 0.9 steals, and 0.5 blocks per game. Those figures were career-highs for points, rebounds, and assists, and I expect his numbers to keep going up.
Murphy is actually eligible for a rookie scale extension this offseason and you’d have thought the Pelicans would have signed him up to a long-term deal by now, but they haven’t. We are still some ways away from the October 21 deadline, though, so there’s no reason to be alarmed about the situation just yet.
