As free agency rapidly approaches, Klay Thompson’s future with the Golden State Warriors is uncertain. Despite the uncertainty, Warriors head coach Steve Kerr has made it clear that he wants Thompson to return to the team. In a recent appearance on “The Jim Rome Show,” Kerr emphasized his desire to keep Thompson in the Bay Area.

“This is the way it works — in the NBA — in any professional sports. There’s just going to be difficult moments, uncomfortable moments, where money is involved, contracts, respect, however you want to put it. What I do know is, Klay has been such an integral part of everything around here.”

“Obviously a multi-time champion, but even more than that, just someone who has such a great connection with the Bay Area, with the franchise, with his teammates, and so we want Klay back desperately. I want him back desperately. We will have our conversations and he’s got to make whatever decision he makes.”

He highlighted Thompson’s integral role in the team’s success and his deep connection with the Bay Area, the franchise, and his teammates. Kerr’s comments underscored how much the Warriors value Thompson, not just for his on-court contributions but also for his overall presence within the organization.

Thompson is coming off a season with mixed performances, where he averaged 17.9 points, 3.3 rebounds and 2.3 assists on 43.2% shooting from the field and 38.7% from three-point range over 77 games. Despite some ups and downs, including stints coming off the bench, Thompson remains a key player for the Warriors.

General Manager Mike Dunleavy Jr. has echoed Kerr’s sentiments, expressing a strong desire to retain Thompson. However, the contract negotiations have been challenging. Reports suggest that the discussions between Thompson and the Warriors have been “frozen,” with no current offers on the table. The primary point of contention appears to be the length of the contract, as Thompson reportedly seeks a long-term deal lasting at least three years.

Thompson’s desire to stay with the Warriors is well-known. He has previously stated that he would love to retire with the only team he has ever played for. However, as a five-time NBA All-Star who has completed his $190 million contract signed in 2019, Thompson is now looking for a new deal that reflects his value and contributions.

The situation remains fluid as the free agency period looms. The Warriors’ management and Thompson will need to find common ground to ensure his return. For now, it is clear that both Kerr and the Warriors‘ organization desperately want to see Thompson continue his career in Golden State, hoping to maintain the core that has brought them so much success over the past decade.
