Not long after the Boston Celtics won the 2024 NBA title, president of basketball operations Brad Stevens turned his attention to the NBA Draft. Well, Celtics fan Bill Simmons has gone down that route as well and on the latest episode of The Bill Simmons Podcast, he bizarrely suggested the team should draft Bronny James with the 30th pick and hold him hostage.

“So, here’s my case, Rob,” Simmons said. “… Everybody says this draft sucks. The Celtics are so deep, they have guys like (Jordan) Walsh can’t even get on the court… Anyone in this draft isn’t going to play for them, it will probably be a stash guy… Why not take Bronny and you basically hold him hostage? Because all these other teams want him, right?”

Chris Ryan sarcastically told Simmons that his statement didn’t sound toxic at all, and the 54-year-old clarified what he meant by that.

“No, I’m saying for the asset,” Simmons continued. “’Oh, The Lakers, do you want him? Well, we took Bronny, give us Max Christie.’ How bad do you want him? I would say Bronny the asset at 30 as a trade thing is worth more than anyone they could get there… It’s like Taken,LeBron, we have your son.’”

Rob Mahoney called it “deranged behavior” on Simmons’ part, in what was a wild segment. While some might be intrigued by the idea, there is no chance the Celtics do anything of this sort. Now, to go with that 30th pick, they also have the 54th pick of the draft and they could potentially select the 19-year-old with it.

If the Celtics do pick Bronny with that second-round pick, it would be because they see potential in him. It would not be a great look for them otherwise, and they’d risk angering his agent Rich Paul if they tried something like this. With just how many big names Paul represents in the NBA, getting on his bad side wouldn’t be a good idea.

What would be somewhat hilarious about the Celtics picking Bronny, though, is that the Lakers have the 55th pick. For them to pick him right before he falls to their great rivals would probably break the internet.

Bill Simmons Thinks Bronny Will Go In The First Round And He Has Heard Buzz About The Suns Picking Him

This isn’t the first take that Simmons recently delivered regarding Bronny that raised some eyebrows. The earlier one wasn’t quite as wild, though, as Simmons believed James would get drafted in the first round and added he heard some buzz about the Phoenix Suns picking him.

Simmons suggested that Klutch Sports, Paul’s agency, might encourage teams to draft Bronny in the first round. He felt that the Suns with their new owner Mat Ishbia would take him with the 22nd pick, as a means to get LeBron James to sign with them.

I never thought that would be a good idea and Paul’s recent statements have only strengthened that belief. He basically stated LeBron won’t just go to whichever team drafts Bronny. Paul made it clear that James would not go to the Suns for the minimum and I think they should just focus on getting a player who can help them win now.
