After finishing with a 22-60 record in the West last season, the San Antonio Spurs are done being one of the worst teams in the league. According to league insider Jonathan Givony, the Spurs are prepared to make some major moves this summer.
“Everything I hear is that they want to be competitive next year, they want to be in the playoffs. They’re not looking to make this a 2-3 year process,” said Givony on The Ringer’s NBA Draft Show.
Besides former LNB Pro A MVP Victor Wembanyama and rising point guard Devin Vassell, everyone on the Spurs roster is available for trade, including young forward Jeremy Sochan, backup center Zach Collins, and 6’5″ swingman Keldon Johnson.
“I’ve heard nobody in the roster is untouchable except Victor [Wembanyama] and Devin Vassell,” said Givony.
As last summer’s No. 1 overall pick, the Spurs wouldn’t trade Victor Wembamayam for anyone right now and they are sure to offer him a full max extension at the first chance they can. Victor, a 20-year-old from France, is arguably the best young center in the league right now and he’s on track to become the face of the game itself after averaging 21.4 points, 10.6 rebounds, and 3.6 blocks per game as a rookie.
After missing the playoffs in 2024, Wembanyama has already said that he wants to be competitive as quickly as possible and the Spurs are doing everything they can to honor his wishes.
Besides young guard Devin Vassell, who averaged 19.5 points per game last season, I don’t think there’s a player the Spurs should be unwilling to trade in a deal for an established veteran player to put beside the NBA’s unanimous Rookie of the Year. At this point, nothing is off the table for the Spurs but it will take a lot of maneuvering to make up significant ground in the Western Conference hierarchy.
San Antonio Spurs Want To Swap Their Picks For A Win-Now Veteran
Victor Wembanyamna, 7’4″, has already proven that he’s a high-impact player in the league, and now he needs some supporting talent to elevate the team and maximize his game.
With picks 4 and 8 in the upcoming draft, the Spurs have a chance to draft two young prospects to the fold, or they can use the picks to trade for an established veteran role player.
“They want to be competitive next year and that’s why I think they will be aggressive with those picks,” said Givony. “Maybe they’re looking to trade for a veteran. Is someone like Darius Garland someone they look at?”
Star point guard Darius Garland has been in trade rumors for months now but it’s unknown if the Cavaliers are serious about dealing him. As a young, two-way guard who can make plays, score in bunches, and handle the ball, he’d make an ideal fit next to Wembanyama and he could make an explosive backcourt with Vassell.
It’s unknown what kind of package it would take to lure away Garland, but the Spurs have enough picks and assets to make things interesting this summer and they are expected to be involved in a number of sweepstakes.
Now that Victor has finally arrived, the Spurs don’t have a second to waste his talents and it’s imperative that they get the man some help before his rookie contract expires in three years.
