Former Celtics swing man Glen Davis was recently sentenced to 3.5 years in prison over his involvement in an NBA insurance fraud scheme. Somehow, despite the ruling, Davis seemed completely unshaken and even joked about his upcoming prison time as an opportunity to get in shape and stop eating cheeseburgers.
“I’ve got a cold imagination though… I’m gonna have to choke the chicken in the bathroom. I’m gonna be swole though. I swear to god I’m gonna get in so much shape. On God, that’s the only way you can stop me from eating hamburgers is to put me in jail. God said, ‘You won’t stop eating hamburgers and Cheetos I’m gonna put you in jail. So now I’m gonna come to rock.”

While much of the details of this incident have not yet come to light, Davis could have been charged with up to 20 years behind bars after being found guilty of making false claims for medical and dental procedures that they never received.
It’s currently unknown how much money Davis stole with this method, but he hasn’t been apologetic about it and this isn’t his first time in trouble with the law. Back in 2018, he was forced to pay out $150,00 after being caught with marijuana in Maryland. In the aftermath, he posted this video, which denied any wrongdoing and blamed the NBA for discriminating against a “black man making money.”

Davis, 38, played for 8 years in the NBA on stints with the Celtics, Magic, and Los Angeles Clippers. His most notable stretch was from 2008-2013, when he averaged 9.4 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 1.0 assists per game off the bench. Davis retired in 2015 as a 1x champion with the Boston Celtics.
While Davis has mostly been out of the public spotlight since leaving the NBA, he’s been a black eye to the league’s reputation ever since. Between his possession charge and now this guilty verdict in the fraud scandal, it seems “Big Baby” is just not able to stay on the right side of the law.
The NBA Does Not Tolerate Player Misconduct
In the David Stern era, the NBA was notorious for being extra hard on their players and that’s very different from what we see in the Adam Silver era.
Even so, the NBA has never been one to tolerate anything that can damage its reputation. In the example of Kevin Porter Jr., he was pushed out of the league entirely over his domestic violence incident and the same would have been true for Miles Bridges if his case went any differently.
When former Clippers owner Donald Sterling was caught making racist remarks behind closed doors, Adam Silver personally gave him a lifelong suspension and forced him to sell the team.
In the case of Glen Davis and anyone else who was caught in this healthcare scam, the NBA took it as an opportunity to send a message and issue a warning against anyone who might have similar ideas in the future. Big Baby will have to spend nearly four years of his life behind bars now, and it’s a sad end for a guy who was once such an integral part of a historic Celtics team.
