Draymond Green didn’t hold back in expressing his disappointment with Anthony Edwards’ recent comments regarding the NBA All-Star Game. Edwards, the emerging star of the Minnesota Timberwolves, made remarks suggesting a lack of interest in the competitiveness of the All-Star Game, a sentiment that Green found troubling.

“To see guys like, um, Anthony Edwards, who a lot of people are saying as the next face of the league, like, blatantly say, ‘We don’t care. We don’t want to play. We don’t want to be there.”

“To me that was a bit, um, disheartening. I don’t understand why a young Anthony Edwards wouldn’t want his name sketched in stone… I thought that was a little outlandish.” (7:20)

During an episode of The Draymond Green Show, Green described Edwards’ comments as “outlandish” and “crazy,” particularly considering Edwards’ potential as a future face of the league.

Green emphasized the significance of being selected for the All-Star Game and the opportunity it presents for players to cement their legacy among basketball’s greats. He found Edwards’ lack of enthusiasm for the game disheartening, especially given Edwards’ stature in the league.

But Edwards seemed to show no regard as he took left-handed shots, played defense backward, and just finished with 4 points in nearly 13 minutes of action. The 2-time all-star is having a phenomenal season averaging 26.3 points, 5.2 rebounds and 5.3 assists for the Wolves, who are leading the West with a record of 39-17.

Green’s critique stems from his belief that participating in the All-Star Game is not just about having fun but also about leaving a lasting impact on the sport. He highlighted the importance of players like Edwards embracing the responsibility that comes with being a potential face of the NBA and actively contributing to the growth and success of the league.

Despite Edwards‘ relatively brief appearance in the All-Star Game, Green sees the event as a platform for players to showcase their talents and elevate their status in the league. He believes that Edwards, with his immense talent and potential, should approach the All-Star Game with a greater sense of appreciation and purpose, recognizing the opportunity it affords to leave a lasting mark on the sport.

Green’s criticism reflects his deep respect for the traditions and significance of NBA events like the All-Star Game and his desire to see young players like Edwards embrace their role in shaping the future of the league.

How Do You Fix The All-Star Game?

The NBA All-Star Game has long been criticized for its lack of competitiveness, and this year’s event in Indianapolis was no exception, with the Eastern Conference defeating the Western Conference in a high-scoring affair. To address this issue and revitalize the excitement surrounding the All-Star Game, several key changes could be implemented.

Firstly, introducing prize money for the winning team could significantly elevate the level of competition. Just as the NBA’s inaugural In-Season tournament saw heightened intensity and engagement due to the $500,000 incentive, offering a substantial prize to the victorious All-Star team could incentivize players to give their all on the court. By attaching tangible rewards to victory, the game would regain a sense of purpose and urgency, motivating players to compete at their highest level.

Secondly, providing players with adequate preparation time leading up to the All-Star Game could enhance the quality of play. As suggested by NBA veteran Draymond Green, allowing players a proper day to prepare, including time for warm-ups, practice, and mental preparation, would ensure that they are physically and mentally ready to compete.

By mirroring the pre-game routines of regular-season matchups, players would be better equipped to showcase their skills and engage in more competitive gameplay.

Additionally, implementing a significant stake for the winning team between East vs. West, such as home-court advantage in the NBA Finals, could further incentivize players to prioritize victory in the All-Star Game. Given that many All-Star participants hail from top-tier teams with championship aspirations, the prospect of securing home-court advantage in the Finals could serve as a powerful motivator.

By tying the outcome of the All-Star Game to a tangible benefit that directly impacts the postseason, the level of competition would undoubtedly escalate, resulting in a more compelling and meaningful event for players and fans alike.

Revitalizing the NBA All-Star Game requires a multifaceted approach that addresses both the incentives for players and the overall structure of the event. By introducing prize money, providing adequate preparation time, and attaching significant stakes to victory, the NBA can restore the competitiveness and excitement of the All-Star Game, ensuring that it remains a highlight of the basketball calendar for years to come.
