Spencer Dinwiddie was the biggest name available on the buyout market this year after he was shockingly waived by the Toronto Raptors. Dinwiddie has joined the Lakers to help their guard issues, choosing to sign with his childhood team instead of returning to the Dallas Mavericks.
Dinwiddie explained why he chose the Lakers, but the analogy he used to do it has some fans confused.
“Let’s say you’re a kid and you get your ass whupped by the bully. Dallas would have been like your mama, like, ‘It’s OK, baby.’ … Lakers are like your dad: ‘Nah, you better go out there and fight ‘til you win.’”

Many people think Dinwiddie is calling the Mavericks soft compared to the Lakers, which is a funny statement to make given how this season has been progressing for both teams. In actuality, Dinwiddie was likely referring to Dallas as the easy and safe option, as he had the best run of his career on the Mavs next to Luka Doncic. Spencer averaged 17.1 points and 4.9 assists over 76 games with the Mavericks.
Dinwiddie has upset some Mavs fans with his comments, not the best idea for a player who has alienated the fanbases of two other franchises. Mavericks fans loved Spencer but many are upset about how he decided to frame this answer. He could have just said he’s looking for a new challenge instead of making weird comments about one team being a mother and the other being a father.
Dinwiddie is averaging 12.6 points and 6.0 assists this season. He needs to succeed in LA, or else he will be permanently pigeonholed into being a minimum or tax-payer exception player.
Spencer Dinwiddie Believes No Team Has A Ceiling Like The Lakers
Spencer Dinwiddie was extremely praiseful of the Lakers in his first set of interviews as a member of the franchise. He candidly discussed what he’s seen from the team this season, claiming that at their best, the Lakers might be unbeatable.
“It’s a team that, when everything’s on the line, they can rise to a level that no other team can get to. Obviously, they won the In-Season Tournament, have won big-time basketball the past couple of years. Sometimes it’s hard to maintain that throughout a whole season, but at the end of the day, they know how to win. That’s what you know. Every night they’re gonna get somebody’s best shot just because of the name that is on the uniform, and obviously, you have arguably the greatest player of all time on the floor as well. So, a lot of guys are gonna give him personally their best shot as well.”

Dinwiddie also alluded to joining the Lakers because of LeBron James after Christian Wood tried taking the credit for luring his former teammate onto the Lakers.
“How the hell are we going to give C-Wood the credit? I’m giving the credit to Bron.”

With the Lakers fanbase and locker room excited for this move, everyone will be praying Dinwiddie lives up to the billing. If his run with the 2022 Mavs is anything to go by, he’s capable of being one of their primary guard scorers even if he’s coming off the bench.
