Last night’s slate of NBA action was dominated by scenes of Giannis Antetokounmpo storming the court after his 64-point night. It was revealed at the time that he was trying to get the game ball from the Indiana Pacers, who claim that they took it to give to their rookie, Oscar Tshiebwe, after the game. While Giannis believes the ball belongs to him, Mavericks owner Mark Cuban suggested that he should have taken the box score instead.
“If you have a rookie who’s never scored before in an NBA game, that’s a big deal that only happens once,” said Cuban via TMZ. “So, I’d give the ball to the rookie. With situations like that. I’d take the box score, I’d get his teammates to sign it and I’d frame it for him. Sixty-four is a big deal,” Cuban said. “It rarely, rarely, rarely happens. And for Giannis it was a big deal, but if it’s my home game, unless the rookie says it’s OK, I’m giving the ball to the rookie.”
Tshiebwe only scored a single point in the game, but it was apparently enough for the Pacers to give him the game ball from Giannis’ historic scoring night. Fortunately, the officials were able to give Giannis the game ball but there remains some debate on if it’s even the real thing.
Giannis Went Berserk After 64-Point Game
As a 2x NBA MVP, Giannis Antetokounmpo has had a lot of big nights in the NBA but his game against the Pacers on Wednesday was on another level. With 64 points and 14 rebounds, he set a career-high and a new franchise record in scoring, finishing with an efficiency of over 70% shooting. Despite the performance, the story of the night was a scene that happened after the final buzzer. In pursuit of the game ball, which he felt belonged to him, Giannis charged the opposition for answers. Eventually, it was revealed that the Pacers took it to give to their rookie before Giannis made a scene of getting it back.
It was a truly wild and unhinge moment from the Greek Freak, who should have been all smiles after a dominant performance. Instead, it was chaos and madness as he put his emotions on full display. Hopefully, now that the matter is settled, this whole ordeal can be put to rest but the picture of Giannis running through the locker room will no doubt remain among the most memorable moments of the season.
Giannis Is On A Mission
While a case can be made that the Bucks have been disappointing as a team this season, Giannis is the one component that has kept them alive. This season, at 29, he’s having a career year with averages of 32.0 points, 10.8 rebounds, and 1.3 blocks per game on 62% shooting. On all fronts, it’s been an impressive run for the Greek Freak, who is inserting himself into another MVP conversation.
With familiar competitors like Nikola Jokic and Joel Embiid at the top of the MVP leaderboard, Giannis is forcing himself into the debate by carrying the Bucks to the second-best record in the East. If he keeps going at this pace, it won’t be game balls that he’s going for this spring, it’ll be the Larry O’Brien trophy.
