Tim Donaghy, a former NBA referee, recently revealed a controversial incident involving Allen Iverson. Donaghy explained that Iverson had a history of contentious interactions with NBA official Steve Javie, which eventually led to Iverson threatening to kill Javie. In response, the officiating staff believed Iverson should have been suspended but was only fined.

“Iverson had had some history with Steve Javie and they had had some issues going back and forth… Iverson had threatened Javi that he was going to kill him. And, you know, we as an officiating staff felt that Iverson should have been suspended. They didn’t suspend him. They just fined him.”

“So I had the next game that he was playing in, and the three of us, when we officiated that game, came to the conclusion that we were going to try to stick it to him by calling palming violations on him, something that he did every night and was let go. So we went out and each of us had called a palming violation on him that night.”

Donaghy, along with two other officials, had the opportunity to officiate a game that Iverson was playing in after the incident. They collectively decided to make their displeasure known by calling palming violations on Iverson, a violation that he often got away with. During the game, each of the three officials called a palming violation on Iverson.

Iverson, displaying his keen understanding of the situation, approached Donaghy during a free throw and inquired how long the retribution would continue. Donaghy, with a feigned look of innocence, denied any knowledge of what Iverson was talking about, leaving the player to laugh and shake his head, recognizing the officials’ strategy.

This revelation provides an intriguing glimpse into the dynamics between NBA players and referees, shedding light on the lengths to which some officials might go when they believe a player has crossed a line, even if it involves questionable calls during a game.

Rasheed Wallace Wanted To Fight Tim Donaghy

The contentious relationship between former NBA player Rasheed Wallace and ex-NBA referee Tim Donaghy came to light in a shocking revelation by Donaghy himself. This incident highlights the intense emotions and sometimes menacing confrontations that can occur in the world of professional sports, specifically in the context of technical fouls and controversial officiating decisions.

During an interview with VladTV, Donaghy detailed an encounter that took place while he was officiating a game with fellow referees Steve Javie and Scott Wall. Wallace, playing for the Portland Trail Blazers, had a standout performance in the game, scoring approximately 30 points. However, tensions flared when Wallace vehemently disagreed with a foul called by Scott Wall and expressed his frustration by throwing the ball at the referee’s back, an action that went unnoticed by Wall.

Donaghy, in a split-second decision, assessed a technical foul against Wallace, believing that the ball toss was intentional. Notably, this wasn’t the first time Donaghy had issued technical fouls to Wallace, contributing to the escalating animosity between the two.

The situation took a concerning turn after the game’s conclusion. Wallace, still seething over the technical foul, reportedly waited for Donaghy in the parking lot, where the officials had parked their car. When Donaghy emerged, a confrontation ensued, with Wallace allegedly expressing his desire to engage in a physical altercation.

Tim Donaghy Made $300K Before Getting Caught

The financial journey of former NBA referee Tim Donaghy, as revealed in a recent interview on VladTV, provides a fascinating glimpse into the income trajectory of an official in the league. Donaghy began by recounting his early years in the role, stating that he earned a relatively modest $80,000 annually, with an additional $25,000 playoff bonus. This starting figure seems notably humble given the responsibilities and pressures associated with officiating professional basketball games.

However, Donaghy’s earnings took an upward trajectory as he accumulated experience in the field. He shared that his income progressively increased, reaching approximately $150,000 in his initial years. The incremental rise in his salary reflects the value attributed to seasoned referees in the NBA.

The most remarkable aspect of Donaghy’s financial evolution is that, by the time he concluded his career as an NBA referee, his annual income had crossed the $300,000 mark. This significant jump in earnings highlights the recognition and compensation provided to referees who have honed their skills and demonstrated their proficiency over the years.

Intriguingly, this financial transformation is part of a larger narrative that includes the controversies and legal issues surrounding Donaghy’s career, ultimately leading to his departure from the league. Despite the turbulent end to his NBA tenure, the financial progression he experienced serves as a testament to the rewards available for those who excel in the demanding world of professional sports officiating.
