In Houston, the Rockets distanced themselves quickly after news of Kevin Porter Jr.’s domestic abuse case emerged in the public eye. Now, the situation threatens to get even more dire for the young star as his legal battle continues. In a recent update on the situation, it’s revealed that the 23-year-old is facing a potential penalty of seven years in jail.

“The pro baller — whose full name is Bryan Kevin Porter Jr. — still faces charges of second-degree strangulation and third-degree assault. He would still face a maximum sentence of seven years behind bars if convicted on the strangulation charge,” wrote the New York Post.

After it was discovered that the victim’s neck injuries were not caused by Porter Jr., some of the charges were dropped in the case. But after rejecting a plea deal that would have avoided jail time entirely, it seems Kevin would rather bet on his chances in court instead of making his go away as soon as possible.

“The Manhattan District Attorney’s Office offered a plea deal on the lower third-degree assault charge — with the condition that Porter undergo counseling — but he rejected the offer, Curzer told the judge. Porter, who lives in Texas, has been free on $75,000 bail.”

What Happened On September 4th?

The story begins just a few months ago when an incident between Porter Jr. and his then-girlfriend, former WNBA player Kysre Gondrezick, turned violent. As the record shows, the NBA guard started beating on Godrezick until she was forced to run out into the hallway covered in blood. It was a truly graphic scene that sparked outrage across the NBA community, but it was far from the first time things turned toxic between the couple.

As it was later revealed, Porter Jr. has a history of violent and threatening behavior, which includes ramming his own car into Gondrezick’s. Porter Jr. is also guilty of sowing discourse in NBA locker rooms, which prompted one GM to call for him to be cut as far back as February. So, by the time this latest scandal was unearthed, it was the final straw for Rockets executives, who proceeded to cut their ties with the young baller.

Kevin Porter Jr. May Never Play In The NBA Again

It seems like you can get away with pretty much anything in the NBA as long as you’re talented enough. Over the past few years, we’ve seen some pretty wild stuff from athletes, ranging from Kyrie Irving’s holdout to Miles Bridges’ ongoing court case. While Porter Jr. is just the latest in a long history of condemnable actions by players, the tolerance for domestic abuse is lower than it’s ever been. As the NBA doubles down on their values, guys like Porter Jr. are a bad look for the brand and teams haven’t been willing to overlook this massive violation to make use of his talent.

So, for former USC star Kevin Porter Jr., this may really be the end of his short-lived career. After entering the league in 2019 as the 30th overall pick, there was hope he could blossom into a star in the NBA and that faith was verified when he averaged 16 points per game in his second season. Unfortunately, after just four years, he was cut from Houston and sent to exile as an unsigned free agent. Unless the status of his case changes, or he convinces the world that he’s sorry for his actions, it is unlikely that he will ever make his way back onto an NBA roster.
