  • Team USA can create a superpower for the upcoming 2024 Olympics
  • The Dream Team is widely regarded as the best basketball group ever assembled
  • It took Kobe Bryant and LeBron James in their primes for the USA to win gold in 2008

All eyes are on the 2024 “Avengers” Team that will be headlined by the likes of LeBron James, Stephen Curry, and Kevin Durant after Team USA’s shocking exit from the 2023 FIBA Tournament, which resulted in no single medal won. In fact, the Americans have not won the last two FIBA World Cups, finishing seventh in 2019 and fourth in 2023. Two major competitions have passed, and the USA does not have a single medal to show for it which is unacceptable.

As a result, with the new Avengers Team expected to dominate international competition in 2024, many are wondering how this squad stacks up to the likes of the 1992 Dream Team led by Michael Jordan and the 2008 Redeem Team featuring Kobe Bryant. The 1992 Dream Team was absolutely dominant in the Olympics, even if it did not feature two-time NBA champion Isiah Thomas.

They won all five of their group-stage games convincingly before defeating Puerto Rico, Lithuania, and the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) to secure a spot in the gold medal game. In the gold medal game, the Dream Team emerged victorious against Croatia with a 117-85 victory, securing the gold medal. No doubt, the Dream Team is considered arguably the greatest collection of players we have seen in basketball history.

The 2008 Redeem Team was built after America’s shocking exits from the 2004 Olympics and the 2006 FIBA Tournament. In the semifinals of the 2004 Athens Olympics, Team USA faced Argentina with a roster of experienced players, including NBA stars such as Manu Ginobili, Andres Nocioni, and Carlos Delfino. The semifinal game was a competitive and tightly contested battle from start to finish until the experience of Argentina proved to be too much and the South Americans won the game 89-81.

Two years later, in 2006, the USA went on to lose to Greece in the semifinals, sparking debate on how the Americans could win gold again with so many young stars still finding their footing (LeBron James, Carmelo Anthony, Dwyane Wade). However, it was Kobe Bryant who proved to be the difference as the shooting guard was the leader behind USA’s 2008 Redeem Team that went undefeated.

With the Avengers Team looking to take revenge for the USA’s fourth-place finish in the 2023 FIBA Tournament, it is time to stack them up against the two legendary teams from the past and deduce which side was truly the greatest. Here is the analysis of each team’s starters, benches, and distinct advantages of each side before a winner is announced.

Starters

Starters Of Dream Team, Redeem Team, Avengers Team - Comparison

1st Place – Dream Team: Magic Johnson, Michael Jordan, Charles Barkley, Karl Malone, Patrick Ewing

2nd Place – Redeem Team: Jason Kidd, Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, Carmelo Anthony, Dwight Howard

3rd Place – Avengers Team: Stephen Curry, Devin Booker, LeBron James, Kevin Durant, Anthony Davis

The 1992 Dream Team is widely regarded as one of the greatest basketball teams in history. In the Gold Medal Game against Croatia, coach Chuck Daly started three forwards and two guards. Magic Johnson and Michael Jordan were two of the best players of all time in their respective positions and brought unlimited experience and winning intangibles. The lineup features a perfect blend of leadership, scoring, versatility, and defensive prowess.

In the frontcourt, the size and raw dominance of Barkley, Malone, and Ewing would be too much to handle. Each player is athletic, strong, focused, and superstar-level on both ends of the court. They had incredible chemistry, and their basketball IQ was off the charts. This team was dominant on both ends of the floor and would have the edge against the other two teams due to their experience, skill set, and overall basketball IQ.

The 2008 Redeem Team was an exceptionally talented and athletic group of players. Kobe Bryant and LeBron James were at their peak, and Jason Kidd provided excellent playmaking and leadership. Carmelo Anthony added scoring versatility, and Dwight Howard was an elite rim protector and rebounder.

While this team had great individual talent, it may lack the cohesion and experience of the 1992 Dream Team, which is why it’s ranked second. Other than Kobe Bryant and LeBron James, the 1992 Dream Team would not find a way to include any of the other three starters as competition for the starting lineup.

Finally, the 2024 Avengers Team features some of the best players of their era, but they are up against legendary competition from the other two teams. Stephen Curry is a prolific shooter and playmaker, while Devin Booker adds scoring and versatility. LeBron James, even in his late 30s, remains a dominant force on both ends of the floor. Kevin Durant is an elite scorer, and Anthony Davis is a versatile big man.

While this team is incredibly talented and could potentially match up well against the Redeem Team, they may struggle against the experience and all-around excellence of the Dream Team. It is important to note that Curry, Durant, and James are all slightly older and that ultimately proves the difference in the end.

Bench

Benches Of Dream Team, Avengers Team, Redeem Team - Comparison

1st Place – Dream Team: John Stockton, Clyde Drexler, Larry Bird, Scottie Pippen, Chris Mullin, Christian Laettner, David Robinson

2nd Place –  Avengers Team: Damian Lillard, Kyrie Irving, Kawhi Leonard, Jimmy Butler, Jayson Tatum, Joel Embiid, Bam Adebayo

3rd Place – Redeem Team: Chris Paul, Deron Williams, Dwyane Wade, Michael Redd, Tayshaun Prince, Carlos Boozer, Chris Bosh

The 1992 Dream Team’s bench is absolutely loaded with Hall of Fame talent. John Stockton and Clyde Drexler provide backcourt depth and versatility, Larry Bird brings scoring and basketball IQ even if he was often injured at the time, Scottie Pippen offers elite defense, Chris Mullin is a sharpshooter, Christian Laettner adds frontcourt depth, and David Robinson is an elite rim protector and rebounder.

This bench would dominate against most opponents and is a significant advantage for the Dream Team. There is simply too much dominance and winning intangibles on the bench to ignore along with chemistry among players.

The 2024 Avengers Team’s bench is also filled with elite talent, particularly in the backcourt and frontcourt. Damian Lillard and Kyrie Irving provide scoring and playmaking, while Kawhi Leonard and Jimmy Butler offer defensive prowess and versatility on the wings. Jayson Tatum is a scoring threat, and Joel Embiid and Bam Adebayo provide a strong interior presence.

While this bench is incredibly talented, it may not have the same level of depth and experience as the Dream Team’s bench, which is why it’s ranked second. Remember, it is more about skills in international competition, toughness and intangibles are also highly rated more than individual talent.

Finally, the 2008 Redeem Team’s bench is certainly talented but doesn’t quite match up to the other two benches in terms of sheer star power and depth. Chris Paul and Deron Williams are excellent playmakers, and Dwyane Wade provides scoring and athleticism. Michael Redd is a sharpshooter, and Tayshaun Prince is known for his defense. Carlos Boozer and Chris Bosh are solid frontcourt options but lack the dominance and size of the big men on the other teams.

While this bench has some strong players, it lacks the same level of star power and versatility as the other two benches. In summary, the 1992 Dream Team’s bench is ranked first due to its unmatched depth and Hall of Fame talent. The 2024 Avengers Team’s bench, while highly talented, is ranked second, especially after Joel Embiid’s decision to join the Americans, and the 2008 Redeem Team’s bench is ranked third due to not having the same level of star power and depth as the others.

Dream Team Advantages

The Dream Team, composed of basketball legends like Magic Johnson, Michael Jordan, Charles Barkley, Karl Malone, and Patrick Ewing, possessed several key distinct advantages. Firstly, their unparalleled scoring ability, with Jordan regarded as the greatest scorer in NBA history and Barkley and Malone known for their dominant inside presence, made them a formidable offensive force.

Secondly, their exceptional passing and court vision, exemplified by Magic Johnson, John Stockton, and Larry Bird, ensured precise ball movement and teamwork. Defensively, they were anchored by the shot-blocking prowess of players like Ewing and David Robinson.

Additionally, the Dream Team had unmatched versatility with players who could excel in various positions, making them a well-rounded and cohesive unit, ultimately dominating the 1992 Olympics and setting a gold standard for international basketball.

Redeem Team Advantages

The Redeem Team’s unmatched athleticism, spearheaded by LeBron James and Dwight Howard, provided an explosive edge on both ends of the court, allowing for fast breaks and dominant shot-blocking. Secondly, the team’s scoring firepower was formidable, with Kobe Bryant and Carmelo Anthony being elite scorers, and LeBron James serving as a versatile playmaker and scorer.

The presence of Jason Kidd and Chris Paul ensured exceptional ball-handling and court vision, while Dwyane Wade’s defensive prowess and clutch performances added another layer of strength. Overall, the Redeem Team combined talent, athleticism, and experience to reclaim Olympic gold in 2008 and reestablish American basketball dominance on the global stage.

Avengers Team Advantages

The Avengers Team, composed of top-tier NBA talent like Stephen Curry, Devin Booker, LeBron James, Kevin Durant, and Anthony Davis, possesses a host of key distinct advantages. Their offensive firepower is unparalleled, with Curry’s long-range shooting, Durant’s scoring versatility, and LeBron’s playmaking ability creating an offensive juggernaut.

Next, their defensive capabilities are formidable, with Anthony Davis and LeBron James excelling on the defensive end. The roster’s depth is also impressive, with players like Damian Lillard, Kyrie Irving, and Kawhi Leonard providing scoring and playmaking off the bench. Furthermore, the combination of size, athleticism, and versatility, with players like Jimmy Butler, Joel Embiid, and Bam Adebayo, ensures a well-rounded team that can adapt to various game situations.

The Avengers Team represents a modern-day dream team with a potent blend of offensive and defensive prowess, making them a formidable force in basketball matchups.

Who Is The Best USA Team?

In the quest to determine the best USA basketball team among the Dream Team, the Redeem Team, and the Avengers Team, sound basketball analysis reveals a clear hierarchy. Securing the top spot is the Dream Team, the original and iconic assembly of basketball legends. With a roster that boasted unparalleled scoring, incredible versatility, and a blend of skills that transcended their era, the Dream Team’s dominance during the 1992 Olympics solidified their status as the gold standard in international basketball.

Following closely behind is the Redeem Team, whose 2008 Olympic victory marked a pivotal moment in USA basketball history. Having Kobe Bryant and LeBron James in their primes is too much to handle, especially when a superstar like Dwyane Wade comes off the bench and elite playmakers Jason Kidd and Chris Paul occupy the point guard spot. Comprising a roster of incredible athletes and talent, their athleticism and skill set catapulted them to Olympic gold, but the Dream Team’s historical significance edges them out in this comparison.

In third place comes the Avengers Team, representing a modern-day powerhouse. Their combination of elite scoring, defensive prowess, and versatility, led by the likes of Stephen Curry, LeBron James, Kevin Durant, and Anthony Davis, makes them a formidable unit in today’s game. The Avengers Team represents the evolution of basketball talent and strategy and would be a formidable opponent for any opponent, but the fact that James and Durant are no longer at their peaks hurts this side.

Ultimately, while each team possesses its unique strengths and accomplishments, the Dream Team, with its historical impact and unparalleled talent, stands as the best USA basketball team to date, followed by the Redeem Team as a modern powerhouse, and the Avengers Team as a potential for USA basketball’s resurgence.
