  • Every Asian and African team has been eliminated from the World Cup
  • Only Japan has secured a win for the Asian teams
  • All African teams managed to secure one win

In a surprising turn of events, all national teams from Africa and Asia have been eliminated from the 2023 FIBA World Cup. This development marks a significant shift in the basketball landscape, as strong teams from these regions failed to advance past the first round.

Japan, China, Jordan, Iran, Lebanon, and the Philippines were the six Asian teams that failed to progress beyond the first round of the FIBA World Cup.

Despite their best efforts, none of these teams managed to secure a spot in the second round. However, Japan did lead the Asian pack with one victory, showcasing their potential for future tournaments.

Although expectations were high for the African national teams, they too fell short in the 2023 FIBA World Cup. Egypt, Angola, Cape Verde, Ivory Coast, and South Sudan won just one game each, failing to advance beyond the first round.

This outcome comes as a surprise, considering the growing talent and competitiveness of African basketball in recent years.

China (0-3), Egypt (0-3), Ivory Coast (1-2), and the Philippines (0-3) have been some of the biggest disappointments of the 2023 FIBA World Cup. These teams were expected to progress to the second round but ended up having miserable campaigns.

The elimination of all African and Asian teams from the FIBA World Cup has opened up the race for an outright spot in the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Asian teams, now relegated to the classification phase, will aim to finish as high as possible to secure a favorable ranking for future tournaments. Similarly, African teams will have to regroup and strategize to regain their dominance in international basketball.

No Asian Or African Team Has Ever Won The FIBA World Cup

The FIBA Basketball World Cup, formerly known as the FIBA World Championship, has a rich history dating back to 1950. Throughout the years, the tournament has witnessed the dominance of teams from various continents, but notably, no Asian or African team has ever won the prestigious title.

Since its inception, the FIBA World Cup has seen the rise of dominant basketball powerhouses such as Brazil, the Soviet Union, the United States, and Yugoslavia. These nations, mostly from Europe and the Americas, have consistently showcased their basketball prowess and clinched multiple championships over the years.

The absence of Asian teams in the early tournaments can be attributed to logistical challenges. In the inaugural edition held in Argentina in 1950, no Asian team participated due to the long and costly journey.

However, FIBA has made efforts to encourage participation from all continents, leading to increased representation from Asia and Africa in recent editions.

While the FIBA World Cup has become more competitive since 2002, Asian and African teams still face formidable competition from well-established basketball nations. The tournament has allowed NBA players to represent their countries since 1994, bridging the gap in talent and raising the overall level of competition.

The absence of Asian and African teams from the winners’ list holds significance for the future of basketball in these regions. The 2023 FIBA World Cup has seen the elimination of all national teams from Africa and Asia, highlighting the need for continued development and investment in basketball programs.

The focus now shifts to securing qualification for future tournaments while aiming to secure an outright spot in the 2024 Paris Olympics through the Classification Round.
