- Erik Spoelstra says “most” of the work is done for the Miami Heat
- The coach appreciates being able to bring back most of the team’s players
- The Heat notably lost Gabe Vincent and Max Strus this offseason
The Miami Heat have been one of the teams that have been linked with a star move this summer. They made the 2023 NBA Finals, but the lack of a consistent offensive player behind Jimmy Butler was certainly a concern for the team.
Though the team has not managed to land its top target, Damian Lillard, it seems as though Erik Spoelstra is content with what the team has done thus far. He noted that the team has already done “most” of its work, and added that being able to retain most of their players is a “luxury”.
“We had most of our work done. We’re bringing back the majority of our players and that’s a luxury in this league.”

There is no doubt that continuity is undervalued in the modern NBA. The Denver Nuggets and the Milwaukee Bucks have won the last two championships, after years of attempting to do so with mostly the same players. That shows that it does indeed pay off.
It remains to be seen how the Miami Heat will do next season. They have shown that they are not to be counted out no matter the seed, and they could end up back in the Finals next year.
Many People Believe That Erik Spoelstra Is The Best Coach In The League
The Miami Heat have been consistently competitive while Erik Spoelstra has been the head coach. Since 2008 (Spoelstra’s hiring year), the Miami Heat have only missed the playoffs three times. There’s no doubt that this is an insane accomplishment, and it is easy to see why Spoelstra has lasted so long in a league that has a lot of coaching turnover. In fact, Jerry West once called Erik Spoelstra the best coach that he has ever seen. West noted that Spoelstra makes good players even better, and that definitely has a basis in reality.
For example, before Jimmy Butler got to the Miami Heat, he had never been able to bring a team to the NBA Finals as the No. 1 option. Now, he has done it twice already, and it is possible he will do it again in the future. Of course, Butler clearly put the work in to get better, and that should be acknowledged. However, part of his improvement was definitely coaching, and we’ll see if Erik Spoelstra is able to do that with even more players on the roster.
