The Boston Celtics are reportedly joining the race for Damian Lillard, as the 2022 NBA Finalists reshape their roster this offseason to push for the title that has eluded them in 15 years.
Lillard only wants to go to the Miami Heat, but playing on a bonafide contender alongside Jayson Tatum could be a compromise Lillard will be okay with, according to Ramona Shelburne.
“When you look at the league and his stated preference is to win, and teams that have the assets and maybe the ability to get this done, the Boston Celtics have the ability to get this done.”
The Celtics have often been rumored as a possibility for Lillard, with Tatum reportedly recruiting Dame to the team earlier. Shelburne went on to explain why Dame would be open to this move.
“I know they have expressed some interest already in this, but this is not a team that is necessarily on the list, this is not a city that he would necessarily welcome going to right now, at least from what I understand, but as far as a team that can win and that actually has the assets to do it, they make a lot of sense.”
Lillard averaged 32.2 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 7.3 assists last season to prove to the world he’s still an incredible individual player. He couldn’t do anything more to drag the Blazers into contention, so this split makes sense. Dame needs to have more than one team on his destination list, and if it can’t be just Miami, Boston seems like the best win-now option.
A Lot Of Changes In Boston
Adding Lillard by sending out multiple players, possibly Jaylen Brown, would be just another step in the roster shaping we have seen this summer. Marcus Smart got moved for Kristaps Porzingis and the Celtics just signed and traded Grant Williams to the Dallas Mavericks, taking just second-round picks in return.
They need to make some win-now moves to maximize the potential of their roster before they start wearing down. Next season’s team will already be the one with the biggest shake-ups since Kyrie Irving left the team in 2019. Dame might be their best chance at ensuring they can compete amongst the best without losing in the late rounds of the playoffs.
