By signing Kyrie Irving to a multi-year extension, the Dallas Mavericks ensured they can remain competitive for years to come with him and Luka Doncic leading the show. But as we saw last season, the Mavs are going to need more than just Luka and Kyrie if they want to compete for a title.
Which is why, according to NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski, the Mavericks have agreed to a three-team deal to add Grant Williams to the squad in a sign-and-trade with the Boston Celtics.
“Restricted free agent F Grant Williams is finalizing a four-year, $53 million sign-and-trade agreement to land with the Dallas Mavericks, sources tell ESPN. Compensation update: Boston and Dallas will each receive two second-round picks in the deal.”

The Spurs also joined in on the deal, accepting Reggie Bullock and a pick swap while sending Dallas multiple second-round picks.

Grant Williams fell out of Boston’s rotation this past season in favor of more reliable shooters, but he’s the perfect fit next to Kyrie and Luka for his two-sided game. As long as he can hit shots and hold his own on defense, he’ll help deepen the Mavs’ rotation and give them some flexibility on the roster.
Combine Grant’s acquisition with the signing of Seth Curry and (potentially) Matisse Thybulle, and you’ve got a pretty solid summer for the Mavericks.
Can Dallas Compete For A Title Next Season?
Of course, it’s still far too early to tell how the Mavericks will stack up against the rest of the competition out West, but they aren’t too far off with the pieces they have now. Assuming Luke and Irving can stay healthy, all they really need is some size in the middle to help maximize their potential.
“According to multiple Heavy Sports sources, Irving worked hard to gain the trust and faith of his new teammates, but Doncic found it difficult to cede command of the offense. Word that Doncic pushed for Irving’s return may indicate he’s coming around on the need to find harmony and the opportunity for each to enhance the other.”
We will see soon enough what the future has in store for Dallas, but it’s clear they have every intention of making a run next season and the entire NBA should be worried about what they’re cooking right now.
