The San Antonio Spurs selected Victor Wembanyama with the first overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft. It was a no-brainer for the franchise as the French superstar is touted as the biggest prospect since LeBron James.

While the two sides are excited to start their journey together, ESPN’s Keyshawn Johnson believes the 19-year-old will eventually play for the Los Angeles Lakers.

“Wembanyama is going to be brought up to speed with the Spurs before he becomes a Laker in the next five years,” Johnson said, per Kens5. “So, that’s how I am kind of how I am looking at it.”

He added: “In the end, he’ll have a purple and gold on because you know we target guys. We specifically look for certain guys. That’s what we do.”

The Los Angeles Lakers have a long history of targeting superstars in free agents. The iconic franchise signed the likes of Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Shaquille O’Neal, and LeBron James via free agency.

Wembanyama has the potential to become the next superstar in the league. He averaged 21.6 PPG, 10.4 RPG, 2.4 APG, 0.7 SPG, and 3.0 BPG for the Metropolitans 92 last season.

Victor Wembanyama Loves The San Antonio Spurs

The San Antonio Spurs have a rich history of drafting and developing talented big men. They did so for David Robinson and Tim Duncan. Now, the franchise has the opportunity to do the same for Wembanyama.

More importantly, the French superstar has shown nothing but love for the franchise. Wembanyama went as far as saying that he felt lucky after the Spurs landed the first overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft.

“San Antonio is synonymous with winning,” Wembanyama said. “On lottery night, when the Spurs got the No. 1 pick, I was feeling lucky that they got the pick as a franchise that has that culture and experience in winning.”

Just like any other elite prospect, Wembanyama’s goal is to win an NBA Championship. Getting drafted into the Spurs is a match made in heaven for the big man. The Spurs are currently in a four-year playoff drought, which they will hope ends in the 2023-24 NBA season.
