The trade madness from the 2023 NBA Draft continues as the Dallas Mavericks have traded the No. 10 overall pick to the Oklahoma City Thunder for the draft rights of Cason Wallace, with the Mavs sending Davis Bertans to OKC along with the No. 12 pick.
Wallace will shore up OKC’s perimeter defense as one of the best defenders available in the draft. Meanwhile, Dallas possibly can still target a prospect like Dereck Lively at No. 12 while getting off the Davis Bertans contract.

Wallace averaged 2.0 steals per game. He is incredible as a defender and has two-way potential. He will guard anybody he can while still developing an offensive skill set. Bertans is likely going to just eat up OKC’s cap space, as Dallas gets enough cap space to get under the luxury tax even with Kyrie Irving’s impending extension.
The Dallas Mavericks Take A Good Step Forward
With Taylor Hendricks and Jarace Walker going off the board right before the Mavs’ got to draft, it made sense for them to move out of their pick given their likely target is Dereck Lively who isn’t expected to go to the Orlando Magic at No. 11. They can pick up Lively at 12 and finally have a solution at center.
Moving off Davis Bertans is huge for them as well, opening up space for some offseason flexibility. The traded player exception that Dallas will receive will allow them to use that contract value in a future trade, so the Mavs can continue on their win-now path along Luka Doncic.
