Shaun Livingston has one of the biggest comeback stories in NBA history. The guard was a very reliable player during his early years, but everything changed after he suffered a gruesome knee injury that kept him away from the court for two years.

During a recent appearance on All the Smoke, Livingston opened up on how difficult this situation was for him and what he went through to overcome this situation (29:05 mark).

“I dislocated my knee, my femur tibia, tore three of the four of my ligaments in my knee, and yeah, man, it was a whole day; they basically compared it to a car crash, so you know it’s like skiers, you’re skiing, a lot of skiers have that kind of accident, dislocations but I was just so skinny man, and one came down the wrong way, and it just basically exploded,” Livingston first started.

“So you know the hardest part was getting through the hospital, that whole situation. Is my knee, my leg going to be okay? And, of course, they were talking about the whole amputation and all that around early because, you know, the blood flow and all that. But once that was good – okay, I’m out of the woods,” he added.

The timetable was a big thing for Livingston, but he had to wait patiently to return to the court and restore his NBA career.

“Nobody else has done this, so what’s the timeline? Doctors don’t have nothing. How am I supposed to know when I’m actually able to come back? Where am I tracking at? It’s just a mental process of again trusting yourself. Some guys were born with a lot of confidence, that ultimate belief. For me, I got that through working, through putting a lot of work in, practice, playing, and when I couldn’t do that, it really takes a piece of your soul.”

It wasn’t an easy situation for Shaun, but he lived through that, overcame the terrible situation, and found himself in the right places to revive his career. After signing with the Brooklyn Nets during the 2013-14 season, he landed in Golden State.

After that moment, his career changed, winning three NBA championships from 2015 through 2018 with the Dubs.

Shaun Livingston On Playing Alongside Kevin Durant And Stephen Curry

Livingston reflected on his time with the Dubs, recalling all the good things he lived with the team. Among other things, he described how incredible it was to play alongside Kevin Durant and Stephen Curry.

Moreover, he talked about the issues the team had during the 2022-23 NBA season, blaming the situation between Draymond Green and Jordan Poole during training camp.

Livingston went from being on the verge of losing his leg to becoming a three-time NBA champion, starring in one of the most inspirational stories in the league. He played 833 regular-season games in 14 seasons, averaging 6.3 points, 3.0 assists and 2.4 rebounds per game.
