San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich has spent most of his coaching career in the NBA trying to help his team win titles.

However, Popovich has seen a drastic change in his role over the last few seasons. The Spurs are going through a rebuild, and he has decided to stick with the franchise during this era. As a result, Popovich has suddenly gone from coaching superstars to young talented players. He recently explained the difference between the two and why it’s a different type of excitement to coach young players.

Pop said coaching kids rather than greats has been “exciting in a different way.” But he said there are nights when he says to himself, “What the hell am I doing here? Do I need to do this?' Then he goes to practice, sees the kids “fired up” and thinks, “I wouldn’t trade it.”

Gregg Popovich didn’t deny the difficulties of the transition he has gone through in his coaching career. He even admitted to second-guessing his choice to be the head coach of the team still.

But at the end of the day, seeing the fire in the eyes of the newer generation has managed to keep him around, at least for now.

Gregg Popovich Has The Most Coaching Wins In NBA History

Gregg Popovich is currently in his 27th NBA season as the head coach of the San Antonio Spurs. During his tenure with the Spurs, he has helped them win five NBA Championships and kept them one of the best teams in the league for almost two decades.

Last season, coach Pop surpassed Don Nelson for the most coaching wins in the history of the league. He currently has 1363 wins to his name as head coach. Upon reaching that milestone, Popovich had a heartwarming response.

“Well, I guess it’s obvious what happened, but it’s just a testament to many people. Something like this does not belong to just one individual. You know, basketball is a team sport, and you know, you preach to your players that they have to do it together, and that’s certainly been the case in my life. All the wonderful players, coaches, and staff that I’ve been blessed with. The support from this city. The fans have supported us no matter what. All of us share in this record. It’s not mine; it’s ours, because of all those people in the city that I just mentioned.”

This season, the Spurs currently have a 19-55 record, as the team is the 14th seed in the conference. While coach Popovich is leading the Spurs’ rebuild, it may be time for him to take the backseat and do so from a front-office role.
