Damian Lillard Says Not Winning A Championship Wouldn’t Affect His Legacy

Damian Lillard makes it clear his perception of himself won't change even if he doesn't win the championship.

Damian Lillard has made it clear that he wants to win a championship with the Portland Trail Blazers, but the point guard needs to have the best team available to challenge for the title.

However, Lillard felt pretty happy about his career and made it clear that even though he wants to win the championship, not getting a ring won’t change anything that he’s done in his career or life.

“I think it’s very important when you talk about how other people view me. Of course, people are going to say, “You don’t have a ring.” You see how people talk to Charles Barkley, and he’s Charles Barkley. He was a great player. Of course, it’s at the top of the list for me to win a championship,” Lillard told Michael Scotto of HoopsHype.

“I don’t train and come into seasons thinking about anything more than wanting to win it this year. Personally, I know my body of work speaks for itself. I haven’t won a championship, but I’ve won a lot of games. I’ve had three seasons in my entire career where I wasn’t a winner out of 11 seasons. There were eight seasons where we were winning, and I was performing consistently at the level I’ve performed at for 11 years,” he added.

Lillard says that all the things he’s done in his career have been special. He’s clear that things would feel bad for him, but even in that situation, he’ll be ok with whatever way his career goes.

“That has to mean something, especially with how I’ve been as an individual, to go along with my performance. That has to say something. A championship would mean a lot to me, but in my personal opinion, if I don’t win it, it’s not the end all, be all to me. I wouldn’t be happy with it, but I think when you talk about other people’s perceptions, I think it’s extremely important to my legacy. It’s extremely important to me, but my opinion of me not winning wouldn’t be the same as others.”

Dame is turning 33 next month, and things could get more complicated for him if the championship doesn’t come soon. Lillard is ready to compete for that coveted championship, but he wants to have the best team available for that.

Lillard Still Gave An Ultimatum To Trail Blazers

The former Rookie of the Year has made it clear he wants to win in Portland, but if the team doesn’t assemble the best squad, he’ll have to make some difficult decisions. In 58 games last season, the Blazers posted 32.2 points, 7.3 assists and 4.8 rebounds, shooting 46.3% from the field and 37.1% from beyond the arc.

Now the ball is on the Blazers’ court, as they need to make the best decisions ahead of next season. If they keep the No. 3 overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft, the player most probably will leave the team to end his long tenure at Moda Center.
