- D’Angelo Russell detailed how Austin Reaves is a “killer” on the court
- Austin Reaves has always known that he’s “built like that”
- Russell thinks Reaves gets discredited because of his skin color
Guard Austin Reaves became an indispensable player for the Los Angeles Lakers during the 2022-23 season, with his versatile skill set being extremely valuable next to LeBron James and Anthony Davis. In particular, Reaves’ perimeter shot creation has been crucial to the team’s offense, and at times we have seen Reaves take over games even when James and Davis were on the court.
Recently, we saw D’Angelo Russell open up on Austin Reaves’ “killer” mentality when he’s on the court. He noted that some people may “discredit” Reaves because he’s white, but added that Reaves has a real game. It is clear that there’s respect toward Reaves from Russell, and it’ll be interesting to see how they do in the backcourt together next season.
“Killer. Killer. Oh my god [Austin Reaves] is a killer… He kind of always felt like ‘Yeah, I can do that. I’m built like that.’… They probably discredit him because of his skin color, but he got game.”

There is no doubt that many among Lakers Nation are high on the sort of player that Austin Reaves could become in the future. In fact, coach Darvin Ham already suggested that Reaves can be an All-Star at some point in his career. Though that may be a bit of an optimistic evaluation of Reaves, it is clear that he is a valuable role player for the team.
During the playoffs, Austin Reaves averaged 16.9 points per game, 4.4 rebounds per game, and 4.6 assists per game. It’ll be interesting to see whether he can keep up that sort of production throughout the whole regular season, and he seems primed for a career year with the Lakers.
Steve Kerr Picked Austin Reaves For FIBA Team After Watching Him Destroy The Warriors In The Western Conference Semifinals
In the playoffs, Austin Reaves had a solid series against the Golden State Warriors, and he clearly made an impression on coach Steve Kerr, who is also the coach at this year’s FIBA World Cup. In fact, coach Steve Kerr revealed that he picked Austin Reaves for the team due to him playing well against the Warriors in the playoffs.
It remains to be seen how well Austin Reaves plays during the FIBA World Cup. There is no doubt that Steve Kerr thinks very highly of the guard, and perhaps we’ll see Reaves earn a prominent role on the team as they go through training camp.
