Former NBA MVP Derrick Rose announced his retirement, sending a statement to The Athletic. Shams Charania broke the news on X, and Rose noted that he wanted to focus on the next chapter of his career, beyond the sport of basketball. He added that he had no regrets about how his career played out, and would do it all again.

“The next chapter is about chasing my dreams and sharing my growth. I believe the true success comes from becoming who you were created to be, and I want to show the world who I am beyond basketball. Whether good or bad, everyone has a ‘What if’ story in their life. Even if I could, I wouldn’t change anything in mine, because it’s what helped me find real joy.”

Additionally, Chris Haynes of Yahoo Sports added that he received a text message from Derrick Rose which expressed his love for the sport of basketball. Having accomplished his goals, he looks at this retirement as a thank you rather than a farewell.

“Basketball was and always will be my first love. As a teenager, I had a goal of becoming an NBA player, and I achieved that. This isn’t a goodbye to the game I love; it’s a thank you.”

Rose last played in the NBA for the Memphis Grizzlies in the 2023-24 NBA season. Rose, who turns 36 this year, played about 15 seasons in the NBA, walks away with a stellar resume, being a multiple-time All-Star and former MVP winner.

Derrick Rose Had A Difficult, Yet Inspiring NBA Career

There had been some speculation that Rose would be announcing his retirement recently. Earlier this week, Derrick Rose was waived by the Memphis Grizzlies ahead of the 2024-25 NBA season.

Rose only played one season with the franchise and didn’t make much of an impact, even in the veteran role he was brought into play in the wake of Ja Morant’s suspension and subsequent injury.

Adding to the talk surrounding him, Rose posted a video this week on his Instagram that was cryptic in nature, and many fans presumed that he would be formalizing his retirement.

In the last few years of his career, Rose witnessed a bit of a resurgence in form, while playing for the New York Knicks. Fans will remember Rose as the mercurial point guard who took the league by storm in 2008.

Rose would become a three-time All-Star and a league MVP all before the age of 24. In fact, Rose is the youngest league MVP winner in the history of the NBA, winning the accolade at just 22 years old.

A brutal ACL injury in the 2012 playoffs forever changed the trajectory of his career, as Rose would never reach the same heights as a player ever again. He would eventually find a role as a role-player journeyman in the league. A perennial fan-favorite, Derrick Rose leaves the NBA as one of the most well-regarded players of his generation.
