Dwyane Wade has made some striking comments in one segment a BET special about Gabrielle Union, titled ‘Gabrielle Union: My Journey to 50.’ During the segment, Wade shared the comparisons between the NBA Draft process and slavery.
“Just thinking, man. Bring ’em here, clean ’em up. Just to go sell them then they get branded,” Wade said. “I could do nothing but think about the way God built me and how my physique fits… Well, you know, it’s like you go to the NBA and your physique matters. My arms being long, the build of my body, my athleticism. That’s what got me drafted… The same process that changed my family’s life and fortune, the same process that had us enslaved. It’s the same thing. Clean up and let them draft me. It’s built off the same principle.”
The problematic history of the TransAtlantic slave trade will never be forgotten, given how it has shaped the lives of millions of Americans but also because of the sheer humanitarian trauma that era inflicted upon its people.
Wade is being allegorical with his comments and comparing similar elements from the two different eras. He recognized that this process in the Draft changed his life and fortune, but he couldn’t move on from the fact that the process was similar to how slaves were scouted and sold in major slave markets during that era.
Draymond Green Once Used Slavery To Justify His Public Defense Of LeBron James
Draymond Green and LeBron James share a very strong relationship, which leads to Green showing appreciation for James on his podcast quite often. Even though that relationship infuriated fans, Green once tried to use slavery as an example of why he defends LeBron publicly.
“I catch a lot of flak… for the way I ride for Bron,” said Dray. “Me being f—g happy for Bron, that doesn’t dim Steph’s light. I always tell people that’s your losing a— mentality… I always compare it to slavery where they wanna turn us against each other.”
Green is clearly saying what he’s saying within the context that a lot of the power that the slaves lost came from them being put in a system where one would tear down the other to maximize his own chances of protection and safety. Green is using that example and applying it to the modern era,
These examples, be it Wade or Green, are true in essence. However, it does seem a little out-of-touch for them to compare these situations to something as grave as slavery because of their million-dollar net worth.
Kyrie Irving Shared One Of The Most Powerful Messages About Slavery
One of the most outspoken players of our time is Kyrie Irving, who has used social media or press conferences to always make his political voice heard.
Over the summer, Irving was doing everything he could to help people and spread more awareness on race relations. He did the latter with a fiery story explaining to children how slavery stole talented doctors, artists, scientists, etc., just to subjugate them.
“Dear students, they didn’t steal slaves. They stole scientists, doctors, architects, teachers, entrepreneurs, astronomers, fathers, daughters, sons, etc., and made them slaves. Sincerely, your ancestors.”
This is a very bold statement to share with children, but Irving clearly sees it as his responsibility to keep educating people, especially children, about where they all come from.
