Dwyane Wade Opens Up On Leaving Miami Because Of The New Anti-LGBTQ+ Laws: “It’s Unsafe For My Daughter, It’s Unsafe For All The Young Kids”

Dwyane Wade will forever be an icon in Miami after bringing three championships to the city during his time with the Heat. Wade has a lot of love for the city as well, but it is no longer a place that he would want to live in.

Zaya Wade, his 15-year-old daughter, had come out as transgender in 2020, and Florida’s anti-LGBTQ+ laws were a cause for concern for the family. During an interview last month, Wade stated that they felt it wasn’t a safe place for his daughter, and that was one of the reasons why they felt the need to move to Los Angeles.

“I love Miami,” Wade said. “Miami has done so much for me, Florida has done so much for me. I love so many people there, so much of the fans for showing us love. But the last couple years, the laws, the politics has really become this big conversation. This unsafe conversation. And it’s unsafe for my daughter, it’s unsafe for all the young kids, and the youth, and the adults and the elders in the trans community. So for us, as much as I love that city and as much as I’m always going to be a part of it, for the safety of my family, that’s what it was for me. I couldn’t move back.”

While it wasn’t the only reason for them leaving, it is so unfortunate that it played a big part in it. Wade stated earlier this year that his family wouldn’t feel accepted or comfortable in Florida. You certainly can’t fault them for thinking Florida wasn’t the right place for Zaya, and Los Angeles certainly presents a much better environment for her to grow up in.

Dwyane Wade And Gabrielle Union Have Always Been Extremely Supportive Of Zaya Wade

In situations like that of Zaya’s, the one thing they need the most is support from their parents and she has had that from day one, with Wade stating they are proud parents of a child in the LGBTQ+ community in 2020.

Wade and his wife, Gabrielle Union, have been very vocal in their support of her decision since the time she came out publically as trans. Without their backing, there is a good chance things could have gone south for Zaya, but instead, she is now making a name for herself as a model. There was a cause for celebration earlier this year for the family as well, as she finally got legal approval for her name and gender to be changed.
