On her podcast Unapologetically Angel, WNBA star Angel Reese shared candid advice with 17-year-old Kiyan Anthony—son of NBA legend Carmelo Anthony—on navigating relationships as a young, high-profile athlete. Reese, who has become an influential voice among young athletes, took the opportunity to impart wisdom on handling the challenges and temptations that come with fame, especially when it comes to relationships.

“You need to be careful when you go to the league. Even when you in college, you need to be careful with these women. One slip up—you be seeing these stories? Don’t do it. You’re 17. It’s the women that’s a lot older than you that you got to worry about.”

Her straightforward guidance underscores a critical lesson that many young athletes face as they transition from high school to collegiate or professional sports. With rising visibility and fame, athletes like Kiyan, who have been in the public eye from a young age, are often targeted by individuals who may not have their best interests at heart.

Reese’s advice comes from both personal experience and observation. She noted that a single “slip-up” could have significant, potentially career-altering consequences. Reese highlighted the prevalence of stories about athletes who have faced public scandals, reminding Kiyan and other young athletes to stay vigilant about whom they associate with and to maintain boundaries.

One of the key points Reese emphasized is that Kiyan is not only young but also in a unique position due to his father’s fame and his own budding basketball career. The heightened interest in Kiyan means that he may attract attention from older women, who may not always have pure intentions.

Reese’s advice speaks to the importance of caution and self-awareness for athletes like Kiyan, who are on the brink of entering high-stakes environments, where personal mistakes can often become public in an instant. It’s not just about protecting one’s image but also about making sure they surround themselves with people who genuinely support their growth.

This guidance from Reese underscores a critical conversation that young athletes need to have—about setting boundaries and understanding the potential risks of fame. Her candid approach in warning Kiyan exemplifies her willingness to use her platform to educate younger players, reinforcing that it’s okay to be cautious and to put personal priorities, like health and career, above temporary relationships.

In a world where young athletes are thrust into the spotlight with little preparation for the challenges outside of the sport, Reese’s words serve as a reminder to stay grounded and make thoughtful choices.
