Former NBA star JJ Redick is one of the prime contenders to succeed Jeff Van Gundy as ESPN’s NBA Game broadcast team.

Per Front Office Sports, the player-turned-analyst was one of the names alongside Doris Burke and Richard Jefferson. The list of players also includes former NBA head coach Doc Rivers.

The 39-year-old was previously pegged as one of the favorites to land the role. Earlier, Van Gundy was one of the many big names let go by ESPN in a round of cost-cutting layoffs last month.

Redick has been a prominent face alongside Stephen A. Smith and is known for his sharp takes. He’s worked game and studio NBA analysis for the sports network while also co-starring on shows such as Smith’s ‘First Take.’

NBA Fans React To News Of JJ Redick As The Prime Favorite To Succeed Jeff Van Gundy

Upon hearing the news, NBA fans shared their two cents on the possibility of Redick succeeding Van Gundy.

Some felt he was a better choice than Doc Rivers.

 Another segment wanted Doris Burke.

A few called him the smartest choice.

“I’m a big fan of JJ and how he approaches hoops media and I enjoy his announcing as well. I will say it’s pretty obvious and sucks that JVG got sacked cuz he’s outspoken and unfiltered in his opinions on aspects of the league and I don’t like that. I enjoyed his brutal honesty,” a fan said.

The responses were fairly positive.

JVG was sorely missed. “ESPN had to offer. What a shame. Love JJ tho. Just a different vibe,” a fan tweeted.

A few called him the best in the business.

In our opinion, Redick is surely one of the better fits and can do more than just hold his own. His analysis is sharp, and he’s a well-known face in the NBA circuit.

Only time will tell who JVG’s worthy successor will be.
