One of the hotly contested debates in the NBA world is just who is the GOAT, Michael Jordan or LeBron James? Jordan has been the one widely regarded as the greatest, but LeBron’s incredible accomplishments over the last 10 or so years have seen a growing number side with him in the debate.

Former NBA player John Salley had picked Jordan as his GOAT previously, but he is over these debates now, as he told Brandon “Scoop B” Robinson that you can’t compare players from different eras.

LeBron, MJ Debate is old because you can’t compare eras says John Salley to me:

“Michael stopped playing in what? 2001? You know what I’m sayin’? And without Michael, there’s no Kobe; there’s no more of that style because they do a lot I think to emulate Michael.”

Salley is right when he says that, as so much has changed in the NBA over the years. The rules weren’t the same for Jordan and LeBron and the way the game played was different too.

Another issue with crowning a player as the GOAT in team sports is that you have to account for teammates. A player with a better-supporting cast would win more than someone who was less fortunate in that regard, as no one wins championships by themselves in the NBA. Will that stop people from having these debates? Of course not! A large majority of fans are just so invested in this GOAT debate, and it’ll be around till the end of time.

Michael Jordan Also Once Said You Can’t Compare Players From Different Eras

Jordan himself has never come out and declared himself to be the greatest at any point. He also believes there cannot be a greatest of all time because you can’t compare players from different eras.

“You are never going to say who’s the greatest of all time,” Jordan said. “To me, that’s more for PR and more for selling stories and getting hype… I never played against Wilt Chamberlain, I never played against Jerry West, to now say that one’s greater than the other is being a little bit unfair.”

“I won six championships, Bill Russell won 11,” Jordan added. “Does that make Bill Russell better than me or make me better than him? No, because we played at different eras.”

He makes a fair argument on why there can never be a GOAT in any sport, but the debates on it will never stop. Just recently, we had boxing legend, Oscar De La Hoya pick Jordan as the GOAT over LeBron.
