Kawhi Leonard On His Football Career In 2013: ‘I Probably Could Have Gone To The NFL. I Just Hated Practice.’

2 Min Read

We all know Kawhi Leonard the 2x NBA champion and 2x Finals MVP, but if he made a different decision when he was a ninth-grader, we would be talking about a different Kawhi Leonard, probably the 2x NFL champion and 2x Super Bowl MVP.

Back in 2006, when he was in nine grade, Leonard played as a DB and WR in Riverside, Calif. He had the chance to play football, but he decided to go with basketball. The reason? He hated going to practice.

“I was good,” Leonard told Jeff McDonald of the San Antonio Express-News in 2013. “I probably could have gone to the NFL. I just hated practice.”

Leonard had a cousin that played in the NFL, Stevie Johnson- Johnson played for the Bills, 49ers and Chargers.

Nick Toney of the Checkdown compared Leonard with Calvin Johnson, one of the most electrifying wide receivers of all time, or Tony Gonzalez and Antonio Gates, two of the best tight ends in NFL history. Imagine if he picked a different path and went to the NFL.

Right now he’s a 2x NBA champion and is looking his third trophy with the Los Angeles Clippers, who will return to action next July 30, when they face the Los Angeles Lakers at Walt Disney World.

There is a lot of ‘what ifs’ in the league and this one is huge.
