Kevin Durant’s Reaction When He First Saw Stephen Curry: ‘I Thought He Was White.’

Kevin Durant and Stephen Curry created one of the best duos in NBA history when they joined forces on the Golden State Warriors in the summer of 2016. These two had competed against each other until that year when KD decided it was time to look for a new challenge and left the Oklahoma City Thunder amid controversy.

The relationship between them was a lot older than fans actually know, as KD said he was about 10 years old when he first met the Warriors legend. A couple of years ago, they were at an NBA2K event and the 2014 NBA MVP was asked about his reaction when he met Curry for the first time. Joining them, you had Anthony Davis and James Harden, who couldn’t help but laugh when KD revealed what he really thought meeting Steph.

“I was about 10 years old, and our AAU team drove down to Charlotte to play,” Durant said. “I thought he was white. He was this yellow kid, right? I’m just being real now, right? Where I come from, in the hood, we don’t see that. We don’t see the light-skinned guys around. It was all guys like me.”

However, Durant quickly would realize that Steph wasn’t just the light-skinned guy. He showcased his talents later, surprising the Brooklyn Nets star and making it clear he was a baller.

“I walk in the gym and this guy’s stepping across half court just pulling jump shots,” Durant said. “Splash. Splash. And when we played him, he had like 35 and he was like 10 years old. I was like, who is this? And 10 years later … that was Steph Curry.”

A couple of years later, they teamed up in the Bay, went to three straight NBA Finals, and won two championships. Although the relationship between Durant and the Warriors didn’t end the best way, that is part of the past and they seem to have a very good relationship. Their realities are very different, though, as KD’s Nets are one of the best teams in the league while the Warriors are struggling to find the pace they had two seasons ago when KD was still on the roster.
